It's really been done the same way throughout all nine films. From the OT it was explained that "the Force works in mysterious ways" and in the PT that was expanded upon by tying it up with destiny, prophecy, immaculate conception, and "the Chosen One." With the ST, it was drawing people together that otherwise wouldn't be.
I think a case could be made that Rey was never meant to be this totally perfect character who did everything right. She had both strengths and weaknesses, and perhaps her biggest weakness was being alone and that drove her, like both men and women in the real world, to make mistakes and go for the bad choice. That could be applied to Anakin Skywalker too, but in his case it was knowingly signing a deal with the devil to protect his wife.It makes no sense given how she's set up as a character for her to EVER be attracted to him in that way, not after everything that he's done. It was so contrived and the fact that they went that route with their first female main hero, who supposedly is a role model for little girls, is iffy on top of it all.
Eh, I think initially Finn came across as lovesick puppy and Rey as someone who never had anyone give a damn about her before in Episode VII. In Episode VIII, it was pretty much Rey & Kylo and Finn & Rose, with Rey and Finn only reuniting for a hug at the very end. In Episode IX, Finn was firmly buried in the friend zone with an implication that his connection to Rey was Force-fueled and perhaps always had been.Finn and Rey by contrast had a believable connection on TFA that we got to see develop.
