Sure, but she also went mooneyed damsel a lot more before him as well. He evened out her portrayal a lot more to a stronger baseline, but his biggest contribution was not forgetting her or casting her as Arthur's awful wife/ex, which some writers did from time-to-time. It really sucked being a Mera fan during most modern Aquaman content until Johns. Not all, mind, but a lot.

I'm probably the only Aquafan who really doesn't enjoy that run. The Dolphin relationship was a big part of that. My fandom for Arthur and Mera is mostly Silver/Bronze age then jumping to Johns reviving Arthur and reintroducing Mera in Blackest Night. There's some cool stuff in the middle, but overall the '90s are probably my low point for Arthur and why I usually groan when I see the long hair and beard.

Yeah, coming into the Johns run initially and then coming back to read PAD's run was...jarring to say the least.

It's OK if you read it as Not-Aquaman, but it's still really dated and full of awful designs and narrative choices. Not to mention Dolphin, and the treatment of Mera.

Yeah, Mera's depiction was the last straw for me. She got better right before Arthur died around IC, but it was still pretty rough.

Glad to know you and Frontier at least have my back in this as fellow Aquafans.
