Default Ultimate Marvel General and Reading Order

First off, Ultimate fans - welcome to our new home!

As you surely noticed, we no longer have an Ultimate Subforum; but that's okay. The Marvel Comics forum will still have discussions for the new issues that come out, and will hopefully help even more people join the conversation.

But I thought it would be good to have a thread like this to keep some of our resources in one place. I'll keep notes of upcoming release dates, solicitations, and - of course - the reading order. Hopefully I'll be better about updating it than I've been in the past. Let me know if there's anything else I should add to these first posts.

Additionally, this is a place for general Ultimate Universe discussion. If you have something to say about the UU - say it here! Obviously, you can start other threads about the UU, but some things don't deserve their own thread, and putting them here will help them not get buried.

    Resources.

    Reading Order

Here is a pretty good (though still not perfect) reading order for anyone interested in reading through the Ultimate Universe "in order." It is not a timeline. The books are in chronological order as much as possible, but there are instances where it makes more sense not to read them that way (the Ultimate Thor miniseries is the best example of this). It is also not necessarily in publication order. It's just in an order that seems to work. Post if you have any questions about or corrections to the list.

    Ultimatum
While the official hardcover and trades did not put the issues in an intertwined order, it's my opinion that the story GREATLY benefits from it. After Ultimatum #1, the tie-ins don't crossover much, but I think it helps to alternate between titles.

    -Ultimate Spider-man #129
    -Ultimatum #1
    -Ultimate Spider-man #130
    -Ultimate Fantastic Four #58
    -Ultimate X-Men #98
    -Ultimatum #2
    -Ultimate Spider-man #131
    -Ultimate Fantastic Four #59
    -Ultimate X-Men #99
    -Ultimatum #3
    -Ultimate Spider-man #132
    -Ultimate Fantastic Four #60
    -Ultimate X-Men #100
    -Ultimatum #4
    -Ultimate Spider-man #133
    -Ultimatum #5
    -Ultimate Fantastic Four Requiem
    -Ultimate X-Men Requiem
    -Ultimate Spider-man Requiem

For a more streamlined reading order based on the official Marvel collections, this would work.

    Ultimatum #1-5
    Ultimate Spider-man #129-133
    Ultimate X-Men #98-100
    Ultimate Fantastic Four #58-60
    Ultimate Spider-man Requiem
    Ultimate Fantastic Four Requiem
    Ultimate X-Men Requiem

    POST-ULTIMATUM!

    Ultimate Armor Wars
    Ultimate X
Ultimate Spider-man #1-6 - The World According to Peter Parker
Ultimate Avengers - The Next Generation
    Ultimate Spider-man #7-8 - Crossroad
    Ultimate Avengers 2 - Crime & Punishment
    Ultimate Spider-man #9-14 - Chameleons
    Ultimate Doomsday
    -Ultimate Enemy
    -Ultimate Mystery
    -Ultimate Doom
    Ultimate Captain America
    New Ultimates
    Ultimate Thor
    Ultimate Spider-man #15, #150-155 - Death of Spider-man Prelude
Ultimate Avengers 3 - Blade vs. the Avengers

    Death of Spider-man
Death of Spider-man is not a traditional comic book crossover, in that the two stories are related only for a few panels in USM #157 and AvNU #3-4. Thus, there's no need to intertwine the issues; it would only hurt the story pacing. Since AvNU would spoil two major plot points from USM, but USM would only spoil minor things from AvNU, this is the best order.
    -Ultimate Spider-man #156-160
    -Ultimate Avengers vs New Ultimates
    Ultimate Fallout

If you wanted to cross them absolutely, this order would work.
Ultimate Avengers vs New Ultimates #1-2
    Ultimate Spider-man #156-157
Ultimate Avengers vs New Ultimates #3-4
    Ultimate Spider-man #158-160
Ultimate Avengers vs New Ultimates #5-6
    Ultimate Fallout

    POST DEATH OF SPIDER-MAN
Ultimate Spider-man #1-5 - Who is Miles Morales?
Ultimates #1-4 - The Republic is Burning
    Ultimate Hawkeye
    Ultimate X-Men #1-6
    Ultimates #5-6 - The World
    Ultimate Spider-man #6-12
Ultimates #7-12 - Two Cities, Two Worlds
    Ultimate X-Men #7-12
    Spider-Men

DIVIDED WE FALL, UNTIED WE STAND
    -Ultimate X-Men #13-14 (#13 is the prelude)
    -Ultimates #13-14
    -Ultimate Spider-Man #13-14
    -Ultimate X-Men #15
    -Ultimates #15
    -Ultimate Spider-Man #15-16
    -Ultimates #16
    -Ultimate X-Men #16-17
    -Ultimate Spider-Man #17
    -Ultimates #17-18
    -Ultimate X-Men #18
    -Ultimate X-Men #18.1
    -Ultimate Spider-Man #18
    -Ultimates #18.1

    Ultimate Spider-Man #16.1, 19-22: Venom War
    Ultimates #19-24: Reconstruction
    Ultimate X-Men #19-22: Reservation X
    Ultimate Comics Wolverine #1-4: Legacies
    Ultimate X-Men #23-28: Natural Resources
    Ultimate Comics Iron Man #1-4

    ONE YEAR LATER
    Ultimate Spider-Man #23-28: Spider-Man No More
    Ultimates #25-30: Ultimates Disassembled
    Ultimate X-Men #29-32: World War X

    Age of Ultron
Age of Ultron #10 features an epilogue that directly leads into Hunger and Cataclysm. However, the entire 10-issue story is not necessary to read. For completionists, you can read it here.

    CATACLYSM
Like Ultimatum, Cataclysm's tie-ins take place at relatively the same time. Aside from Cataclysm: USM, there is very little crossover, if any, between the tie-ins and the main series.

    Hunger #1-4
    Cataclysm #0.1
    Cataclysm: Ultimates #1-3
    Cataclysm: Ultimate X-Men #1-3
    Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-man #1
Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand #1
    Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-man #2-3
Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand #2-5
    Survive

For an order that doesn't require switching between books, try this.
    Hunger
    Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand
    Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-man
    Cataclysm: Ultimate X-Men
    Cataclysm: Ultimates
    Survive

    ALL-NEW ULTIMATE MARVEL
    Ultimate Spider-man #200
    Ultimate FF #1-6
    All-New Ultimates #1-12
Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-man #1-9
***All-New X-Men #31-36: The Ultimate Adventure (see below)
    ***Spider-verse (see below)
Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-man #10-12

    The Crossovers
    ***All-New X-Men: The Ultimate Adventure
    All-New X-Men #31-36

    ***Spider-Verse
Spider-Verse is a mega crossover, featuring Spider-men from all over the Marvel Multiverse. Listed below are the issues that feature Ultimate Characters; for the FULL reading order, click here.
    Amazing Spider-man #9-14
    Scarlet Spiders #1-3
    Spider-Verse Team-Up #2-3

    SECRET WARS
Ultimate End takes place concurrently to the main Secret Wars title, but the reading order between the two is not strict.
    ***Avengers #41
    ***Avengers #44
    Secret Wars #0
    Secret Wars #1-8
    Ultimate: The End #1-5

Note on Secret Wars: It is the culmination of Jonathan Hickman's Avengers run, as well as almost everything he has written for Marvel. The main story comes out of Avengers and New Avengers, including the Infinity event. As such, it is not 100% new reader friendly, and the reading order is relatively complex. Here is a pretty comprehensive guide to prepping for Secret Wars I found.

**Ultimate Iron Man I and II are no longer canon. They are now only a TV show within the Universe. As such, you can read them at any point in time.

***These issues are not strictly "Ultimate" Comics, but feature characters from the Ultimate Universe.

the new Ultimate Future Foundation #1? If so, I personally didn't think so. I dig Fialkov's writing, always have, but I found the art and color palette absolutely off-putting. That, and it seems the UU is playing hard and fast with the dead means dead business.

Hey, its a new start. Technically its the first time I've brought this up hahaha

I highly recommend Ultimate Future Foundation. Quirky and good dialogue, good setup and leaves you with a hook to learn more about the organization and their mission.

No problem! But, man, what a bummer. I was pretty luke-warm on all new ultimates, too. I've read every ultimate book the past 14 years so the fact that 2/3 of the new #1's are less than solid is disappointing. That, and I don't even consider them solid entry points to the universe. Too much previous knowledge hinted at and required. Im gonna read another issue or 2 to see if either picks up, AND the artist is changing on UFF in a couple months so that'll help. But yeah, right now… a big "meh."

All that considered, I have no doubt in my mind MM:USM will keep with previous quality. Bendis just knows how to keep this universe alive. At this point i feel like he should just write All-New Xmen and all 3 ultimate books haha

Ah gotcha, no problem. I personally find all new xmen to be the easiest xmen book to read, and the most enjoyable. Too many x books, gosh haha

And Yes! hickman did great things for the UU, then they decided to move him off ultimates. He made Reed into what i consider the most interesting, original antagonist I've read in a very, very long time. I'll always be miffed that the editors moved him off the book, and spencer off of xmen. They both were moving in an insanely new direction, only for both books to leave too many threads and too many questions.

I read all new x-men till battle of the atom and just find it avarage just don't care for the premise or the characters.

Yeah would have loved to see what spencer would have done with the whole apocalypse thing.

Nice preview. Really looking forward to checking out a series about Miles.

Can anyone tell me how long Bendis has been on Ultimate Spider-Man? I hear he's been on it since the start of the Ultimate Universe, so I wasn't sure if it was true.
