Default Black Panther 23 Review - Spoilers Coates Finally Returns!!!

    Black Panther 23 Review

The issue starts where we left off in issue 22. The galactic Wakandan memories are restored based to the ancestors' sacrifice and it results in chaos among N'Jadaka forces. N'Jadaka destroys the ships of his own army as some of the Wakandan who memories are restored begin to fight back. He is in a seemingly weakened state due to not being able to control the symbiote and has an internal dialogue with the symbiote essence. With the gate to wakandan prime disabled the Symbiote essence states they will strike the Wakandan empire with the strength of Gods.

The story shifts back to Wakanda Prime where Tchalla gives a riveting speech ahead of the invasion they are expecting from N'Jadaka and his forces. He honors Nakia's sacrifice and ask if she made the ultimate sacrifice what will they do. It then cuts to Zenzi and Bast having a conversation where Zenzi expresses that N'Jadaka is growing weak due to not being able to properly host the symbiote but Bast reassures her the orisha are never alone.

Back in Wakanda prime, the Orisha have ominously assembled after T'Challa speech. Shuri believes this to be a sign they are there to support in their fight against the galatic wakandans but Ororo cautions that their silence is not an indication of their favor. It is here that she finally accepts her godhead and states she is a part of the Wakandan Pantheon. Jericho agrees with Storm to be cautious of the Orisha presence.

The story the transitions to another location in Wakanda where Ramonda and one of he Mages go to the portal that was closed that locked away the original wakandans. The originators are insulted by her presence and Ramonda essential states she cannot undo the past but can offer them another land in the skies as a form of reparation if they agree to help fight against the common threat that will soon invade wakanda.

The story then shifts back to Ororo and Tchalla. Though Ororo tries to reassure him, he is unsettled by the Orishas presence and believes the wakandans are being setup. Bast appears and she with the help of the Orisha open a portal that allow Njadaka forces to invade Wakanda. The issue ends with the heroes flying towards the portal for the final battle.

There also is a marvel voices story but I will not discuss this here as it was a separate story.

This issue was primarily setup for the last arc of Coates' run but I thought both the story and art were beautiful. Coates ability to take real-world issues (such as reparations) and connecting it in a meaningful way into his story is masterfully done. Wherever you may fall on the topic it causes the reader at least to think about these polarizing topics, which is very much purposeful. Also, seeing these black heroes assembled to help tchalla against this common threat was a nice visual seeing we are in Black history month. This issue is a reminder of the strength of tchalla as leader. The interactions felt very much so organic and not robotic. It was refreshing to see. His ability to inspire and to also have enough foresight to see when he is being duped lets us know Coates' are keen on his assets beyond fist and claws. I'm very excited for the next few issues it should be pretty epic.

Even this review didn't DARE show any of that backup art for the same story, as if acuna ran out of time for a long delayed issue. But i will say if you look at the panels posted you just read BP 23.

Complete trash. Of all the Black Heroes that show up and Coates can’t even have Blade, Blue Marvel, or Monica show up? You know? People that were actually his teammates. And once again Coates goes back to the garbage of using African characters as an allegory for white colonization by having Ramonda make a speech to the monsters about “restoring their honor”. Oh so it’s their fault that they got kicked off of their land? Jwatson said in best in the main thread, this whole run was nothing more than an attempt to just humiliate both T’Challa and Wakanda as a whole. But considering that Coates actually wants to write an X-Men character it’s just par the course for an X writer (or wannabe X writer in this case).

It’s humiliating because from day one, Coates couldn’t accept the concept of an African nation being Black excellence incarnate so he goes in rewriting Wakanda being rife with black dysfunction with the most tired ass African stereotypes imaginable (ex: the infamous rape camps). And let’s not forget that he just refuses to T’Challa fight his own damn fights and just has Storm bail him out constantly. It’s very telling that Storm fans have been celebrating this trash while T’Challa fans have been rightfully pissed off because of the simple fact that this isn’t Storms fucking book. Redjack understood this with KIB because in a book with Black Panthers name in the title, it’s clear that the titular character has to get things done and not someone from another franchise. Again, very telling when you compare the Storm fans reactions to that story compared to the reactions of T’Challas fans.

But then again, that’s partially the fault of the X-Offices for letting writers from different franchises condition y’all into thinking said franchise is where you expect your favorite character to shine instead of the one they originated from.

Rape is not something specific to African people. The unfortunate truth is this is part of humanity. Tchalla fought his own fight in issue 22 when he was challenged by his ancestors. It was Tchalla who earned and fought for the respect of all the past BP that allowed for the intergalatic Wakandan memories to be saved. How then are you concluding he isn't fighting his own battle?

I dont want to deviate too much from this issue but KiB was all types of forced. Having Shuri and Okoye being so impersonal and showing deference to him almost as if they were his servants wasnt something that was depicted in a favorable manner imo. Also, I've seen tchalla fans on twitter praise the issue.

Storm didnt do much of anything in this issue so im not sure why you conclude she is shining. Tchalla is driving force in this story.

If not humiliating, then definitely short sighted. Blue is so far more powerful, and intelligent than Storm. Not to mention Blue Marvel and T'Challa were sci-bros in The Ultimates. To your other point, let's not forget T'Challa is KING, blood and friendship being what they are, all of are still subjects to T'Challa. Yes he has that agency to give orders and they are bound to obey them, that's kind of how it works. KIB BP returned to what was appropriate and the default norm. Redjack gave Wakanda/Black Panther back only man that could save it, and put on full display what has been missing from BP books for a while! Your girl just may be on the cusp of getting some kind of love from X-Men, they need her there anyway.

    How is it short-sighted?

I'm not sure the point of referring to the strength and power of Blue Marvel. Its not relevant to this particular story.

And that is interesting how the word choice you use "obey." I don't see T'Challa as seeing Shuri as someone who is bound to obey him in the manner that you described. That is the part that confounds me. Tchalla is written well when everyone obeys them as he is their master and they are dogs, but showing him lead and respectful of his title but also showing very human interactions is someone shortsighted? I don't really follow this perspective.

KIB BP wasn’t forced. It was doing what any competently written book should do when the goal is to elevate a title character. Show them with high degrees of agency and strong leadership ability. T’Challa is a king, it is his nature to come up with plans and delegate to his subordinates how to properly execute them, with him personally leading the charge. In the medium of superhero comics this means that when Wakanda is under attack, fans of T’Challa have every right to expect that he will be the one develop a strategy and lead his people to victory.

That does not mean his supporting cast (and let’s be frank we really mean Shuri, the Dora, and Storm) should not be able to voice their perspectives or do something extraordinary that wins the day. But it does mean that the majority of the Black Panther’s wins should be a product of his own ingenuity and personal skills in combination with those who follow his rule. No one reads Black Panther comics to see the Dora Milaje give the big speeches, make the plan, and execute the plan while T’Challa sits there taking orders. T’Challa is the one whose name is on the book and having him be a passive actor while his sister, bodyguards, and girlfriend do all the work is not true to how he is supposed to be written.

They are the ones that should be deferential to him as in-universe he is their ruler and narratively he is the lead. If everyone gets equal billing in a book, it is an ensemble, not the solo book that Black Panther was conceived to be for decades. This is an expectation that every fan has of every character and the notion that T’Challa should have to give space to his supporting cast and let them be as independent as him is deeply problematic. You don’t see a movement of fans demanding that Falcon not take orders from Cap. You don’t dare hear people say War Machine should save the day in an Iron Man book. Why should Shuri not obey her older brother and king? Why are the Dora Milan’s, bodyguards to the king, not to follow the directions of the man they are sworn to protect?

Side characters deserve agency but they are not equals to the lead of the franchise, this is an accepted fact of fiction. KIB BP demonstrated this well where Coates has repeatedly shifted focus to every character but T’Challa. He cares more about his superficially “complex” world of Wakanda than he does the character he’s being paid to write. It’s a recipe for commercial failure and thankfully this book is seeing that. Looking forward to the new creative team.

Shuri and Okoye bowing to T'Challa like they were his lowly servants was very forced especially considering past interactions including those shown by hudlin himself. I get his fans want to see him be badass nothing wrong with that but when it's at the expense and contrary with other characters he has had previous interactions it definitely does come across forced.

The funny thing is two your second point is what you say should happen has been occurring in the BP books. Hes been leading the fight against the galatic wakandans, he was responsible for their memories being restored, he was the one leading them in the fight against njadaka forces. A good leader knows when to fight and also when to delegate and thats what we've seen.

Shuri should obey her older brother? Like seriously that doesn't even sound right and makes my point that fans are only ok with depictions so long as he is shown in charge doing everything, and being "obeyed" as if he is a master over everyone. In character I dont think tchalla would want to be obeyed but respected and there is fine line between the two.

Who has been shown an equal to tchalla in BP? The stories have been focal to him.

    Wow. this is a lot.

    okay.

    1) In a monarchy 100% of the people who are not the king and queen are subordinate to the king and queen. In a patriarchal monarchy the queen is subordinate to the king. In a matriarchal monarchy the king is subordinate to the queen.

That includes all princes, princesses, counts, dukes, duchesses, earls, knights, generals, captains, town sheriffs, council members, regular citizens, etc. It even includes the clergy. Wars have been fought over this. It is part of the reason we even have the Church of England.

Shuri is not co-ruler. She is one of T'Challa's subjects. As a royal she's WAY high up the food chain, meaning she can argue more, be a lot less formal when talking to her brother, even tell him he's an idiot if she thinks he's being stupid about something but, end of the day, what the King says goes. Or, the Queen, if positions were reversed. Currently, they are not reversed so what T'Challa says goes. The end.

    2) I paid zero attention to depictions of Shuri and Okoye in the Coates run or the depiction of Storm in the Coates run.

I stopped reading the Coates run after the first scene of the rape camps so I have no direct knowledge or opinion about it, good or bad. It didn't influence me one way or the other.

    3) I didn't write KiB to "elevate" T'Challa or anyone. Or to downgrade anyone. I wrote the characters as I understand them and as I see them. If MARVEL Editorial had any disagreement with that portrayal they would have said so. They didn't so we can assume everybody was fine with it.

    4) Storm in KiB:BP was depicted as she was depicted in the first two issues of the main KiB miniseries. No more. No less.

    5) The Black Panther is about the Black Panther. Whether that Black Panther is T'Challa, Shuri, T'Chaka or any of the others. It's not about Storm or N'Jadaka or Okoye or any of those others. They are secondary, support characters, ONLY present to help tell the Black Panther's story.
