I mean it's not like the backlash started with just the trailer, it's been ongoing ever since that promo image was burned into our brains, the trailer just confirmed that yeah it looks just as crap in motion as it does in stock

I'm pretty sure the backlash started when the silhouette poster came out that looked like a human with Sonic's head... Of course, in the trailer his proportions give him an appearance that's been described as a furry naked child. And with the creepy 'child in a bag' joke at the end of the trailer, well...
