I never read much of the EU. Loved the Thrawn trilogy, read Shadows of the Empire and the book about the period immediately following ROTJ.

As a kid, I had always envisioned the post-Rebellion era going decently well, and being less concerned with larger threats and more about the Jedi acting locally to re-establish order. Basically, I thought it would go from a war story to a Western.

For the exception of the Thrawn trilogy and the Children of the Jedi / Darksaber / Planet of Twilight trilogy, the new canon is more how I thought/wanted the EU to go.

This is the first time that Luke felt like how I envisioned him after RotJ.

I know I am pretty alone on that one.

I did love the Rogue Squadron stuff, though.

I think Luke was also an exile in the last major set of books; although in this case, it was more of a forced exile-and the Jedi were still around and he used the oppurtunity to get caught up on some Jedi lore (although it's possible movie Luke did this too).

I guess exile was inevitable for Luke--he was taught by Obi-Wan Kenobi, after all!

He did take his son along though (although I suppose Rey could still be his daughter, we might find out eventually) on this one. He pretty much got kicked out by the current leader of the Republic at the time-who was a former Imperial admiral who tried to kill him quite a few times.

The leader of the New Republic was a former Imperial admiral? That's wild! I can see why they wouldn't have gotten along well.

I took a different route with the EU. I stopped with the novels just before NJO and dove into the comics instead, which explored stuff before or during the movies. The only post-Episode VI comics I got into was Star Wars: Legacy which had the 100-year time jump, and while it was dark to a certain degree (the Alliance fallen, the Jedi once more on the verge of extinction), it still had a smattering of hope that Cade Skywalker could get his crap together and become a hero during the time of the One Sith Order.

The Vong were more like Star Trek villains than Star Wars characters.
