If the book is well-written then the problem is marketability, not the creators.

Remember when people talked for years about how Al Ewing books never sell, and now Immortal Hulk outsells Batman?

Well-written is entirely subjective and when we’re talking about most books that sell below 14,000 a majority of people tend to dislike it. Comics below 10,000 have no excuse and if you sell that much consistently then you should stop getting chances or other titles.

Don’t pretend that the creative team is all that sells a title.

And don’t pretend that you have to be a sales dynamo from day one to get a hit.

No. If a book has been selling that low for most of it's run, then it's likely that it isn't that they don't like it, it's that a lot of people haven't even read it. That was surely Al Ewing's big problem before Immortal Hulk. If a book has a sudden dive in readership after a year or so (as opposed to after issue 1 or 2, which always sell the most), then you can say they did something that wasn't liked.

Well-written isn’t subjective when it comes to what Marvel looks at. No matter how bad a book may be selling, if there is enough praise for a book that it could get a cult following or something of the sort, then they will invest in that writer. That’s literally what happened with Al Ewing, whose New Avengers and Ultimates weren’t selling but they were interesting and innovative that he continued getting work.

It’s mostly the brand name and or character.

People choose not to read books when they aren’t good and or people in the creative team act poorly. That is the case for a lot of people mentioned in this thread who don’t sell.

Just because they haven’t had a top seller yet doesn’t mean they never will.

Again, Al Ewing and Immortal Hulk.

He never sold consistently as terrible as a lot of the people getting several chances these days. Though I think we should get more data and use that to reward people if the sell books well. Marvel Comics ought to make every book returnable so we can see the real numbers and not just what gets sent to stores and also make numbers for digital sales public so people can stop using phantom sales as an excuse. Then stop giving chances to people who consistently can’t sell.

You do know that Marvel can see the digital sales data and take them into account when deciding whether to give creators more changes or not, right? It's not up to the readers to decide these matters after all, so they have no reason to get access to this information.

And I strongly doubt a large enough part of the readership pays attention to and gets angered by what creators say on their personal social media accounts or forums. It's probably only a few hundred or at most a thousand people frequenting these grounds, and most of them can hardly agree on any single issue anyway.

They really don’t care as exhibited in many of the extremely low-selling books that are still going on. They are corrupt and sell what they want to sell even if the sales suck.

They are a company at the end of the day. The only thing they care about is sales, money, capital.
