I do think Bunn included Briar's exposition to add SOME nuance and ambiguity to what was clearly an editorially-driven heelturn. So I will choose to TAKE that and headcanon the way Briar put it as correct: Hellfire Club are not really nicest folks, and Mags was searching for Emma in those places, and once he confronts Emma he'll calm down.

It's still a shitty heelturn but that makes it SLIGHTLY more tolerable.

Yep, mass murder happens all the time. Sort of like what happened to around 6 million people in WW2. Good thing Magneto doesn't have any connection to that, or what he's doing now would look really hypocritical.
