Cool 50's Music: Pop, Rock, Soul and Doo Wop

I haven't seen too much 50's music in the classic rock or R&B thread, if any, so I decided to start a thread that is specifically for this era of music. So I will start this off with an oldie but a goodie!

    Richie Valens La Bamba!

Thank you! I love Chuck Berry. My father was a Chuck Berry fiend!

I have to say that, despite being born in '65 and having very eclectic tastes among all the genres and eras, '50s rock n' roll is my favorite form of music: Elvis, Chuck, Jerry Lee, Fats, Little Richard, Buddy, the Platters, etc. - for whatever reason, I have been in thrall of early rock since I was a wee one. It's also the best music I can sing to via Karaoke, FWIW.

An obscure 1950s musician by the odd name of Elvis Presley. This kid could have been a king!

The first time I saw him was 1971 while watching a small non-singing part from Viva Las Vegas. I heard the TV announcer mention his name before I had to go to the store with my family, so I asked my father in the car if he ever heard of Elvis Presley. He laughed and said that, yes, he knew who the King of Rock and Roll was and that he was his favorite singer of that music. I then asked him, because of the odd name and accent, what country he was from. He really laughed over that and told me he was from the American South (hey, I was only five!).

I think I first heard of Elvis shortly before or after he died. I was five at the time too, and my parents (who had been fans of his since they were teenagers in the 50s) bought a copy of the last album he released during his lifetime (WELCOME TO MY WORLD). It was then that I began to hear lots of his old catalog dating back to the 50s both on radio and my parents' old records.

In 1953, a song about television was really about sex. Yes, sex.

"I should describe my known nature as tripartite, my interests consisting of three parallel and disassociated groups; a) love of the strange and the fantastic, b) love of abstract truth and scientific logic, c) love of the ancient and the permanent. Sundry combinations of these strains will probably account for my...odd tastes, and eccentricities."
