    Word is bond.

There's a helluva lot of African mythology that Coates could have drawn on for inspiration and source material but alas, he was more invested in portraying Wakandans as being scientifically advanced but woefully inadequate under a Monarchy based system of governance that had served them well for millennia.

He had to foist Westernized "Democrazy" upon them by any means necessary.

It's worth bearing in mind that this was all deliberate on Coates part and an actual continuation of a theme that was originally birthed by Jonathan Maberry in Doomwar wherein that writers contention was that Wakandans had grown lazy through a supposed over reliance on their primary natural resource, Vibranium.

It was Maberry who laid the seeds of ineptitude on T'Challa's part as well as the beginnings of the problems between Ororo and T'Challa in the first place.

In essence, one could reasonably argue that Maberry's Doomwar was the template upon which Coates built his take on the BP mythos as opposed to the solid work put in by Lee, Kirby, McGregor, Priest, Hudlin and McDuffy.

It's very telling that Coates didn't get the message the Stan and Kirby were delivering. Pretty sad that two Jewish guys on 1966 are more aware and woke then some of these others in 2019. But they don't they are too busy stuck in that defeated mindset and can't see potential anywhere or if they do they feel the need to tear it down into something they are used to seeing. Exactly what racists and unfans want

Flex Hectic's wife will not translate today!

I'm already catching mess for claiming that she is "South African Secret Service" trying to Wardog me for information... Not that I object to her various torture methods but that is a whole other thread entirely and strictly for adults only!

Besides, she accused Chadwick of not saying "Yibambe" correctly because she all bourgeois and proper and whatnot!

For the sake of being slick I'm going to try and watch Black Panther again for the umpteenth time and trick her into translating by using my dumbfounded clueless lucking for help face... If not classic Jedi kind tricks should work out fine!

Up until the recent launch of the Watchmen TV show, many of your fellow Americans (regardless of ethnicity) knew next to nothing about the Tulsa Massacre or Black Wall Street so I'm not sure where you get off maligning African immigrants who come to the USA from incredibly hostile environments, adapt to America and then, go on to achieve academically, get good jobs and build solid foundations for themselves for the most part despite the racism they face from some white Americans and the derision and ignorance they receive from some African-Americans.

If you knew anything about the hostile environments some of these Africans came from rife with daily adversity and uncertainty, you'd have some awareness as to why some of these African immigrants you've predictably called out, look askance at some of their African-American cousins who after many years after slavery ended, still remain ignorant as to their own innate strengths and capacity to overcome the very real adversity they face living in a construct designed to slow anyone without full knowledge of self, excelling to the fullest.

I have cousins born in the US to Nigerian parents, who've never had any negative encounters with the police and who for the most part get on with their daily lives dealing with lifes challenges on the regular.

They don't have time to "look down" on anybody as they're to busy excelling but that hasn't precluded them from having their distinctly African names being sneered at by some of their African-American cousins.

As for Coates the quality of Coates writing and its impact on the BP mythos, it was pretty obvious to me before he even penned the first issue of his run, that this writer knew absolutely nothing about actual African history or any of the rich cultural heritages that make up the rich tapestry of the entire length and breadth of the African continent.

I say this with full confidence because at the end of the day, if Coaes had done his due diligence as regards actual research into African history, he would have had a clearer understanding of the historical inspiration for the Dora Milaje, the rich history of pre Western-intervention African systems of governance that existed for millennia that sustained these African civilizations long before the arrival of the white man.

If Coates had even a baseline awareness of actual African history as opposed to his predilection for employing hyper-exaggerated stereotypes of African violence in his storytelling, he wouldn't have deployed his own jaundiced views of Africa into the Afrofuturistic milieu that Stan and Jack created all the way back in 1966.

Coates seeming disdain for Africans coupled with a possible inferiority complex on his part, has him locked in a never ending moebius loop that compels him to force his own thoroughly westernized perceptions of Africa upon a purely fictional African civilisation that was designed by two Jewish guys, to be fantastic exploration of what could have been if left untouched by Western imperialism.

It's Coates ignorance of pre-slave trade African history coupled with his a$$ backwards perception of Africans in general, that's informed every facet of his approach to the Black Panther mythos so it really doesn't come as a surprise to me that some folks who similarly lack any fact based knowledge of Africa and its multifaceted cultures would find no fault with his tone deaf BP solo, the ongoing and very deliberate neutering of T'Challa and his wholesale downgrading of Wakanda to a futuristic nation plagued with the the same psychological mental blocks suffered by others who were subjected to hundreds of years of mental and physical subjugation by colonisers.

Coates skewed mentality has completely unable to countenance the existence of an African nation wholly independent and advanced to the highest level even when based within a wholly fictional sci-fi setting and because his imagination doesn't stretch that far, rape camps and Boko Haram type activities within Wakanda, were the default aesthetic he chose to go with.

The sooner Coates gets done with his retrograde take on the BP mythos the better.

He can go learn how to write comic books with some other character.
Just had to chime in for a moment with all the respect for this post, especially since my parents both come from Haiti, known for the first revolt by enslaved Africans that succeeded in toppling the slaveholders and colonizers from power. I also liked the truth bomb about the Tulsa massacre and how most Americans of all colors were completely ignorant of it until the new Watchmen series on HBO opened its very first episode with a recreation of that atrocity. As someone who had been enjoying the Watchmen series since that first episode, that was a great callout.

I've followed the online reactions to the Watchmen show with much fascination especially in respect as to how much pushback it's received from some critics and viewers alike.

You know the ones who rail against "SJW agendas" and things of that nature.

The fact that the Tulsa massacre usually falsely described as a "race riot," was an actual historical atrocity that isn't even part of the Amercan educational curriculum should let you know who really has an agenda.

Faux woke devotees and their eager acolytes, rarely consider the bigger picture but like Coates, as long as their given their own limited sandbox to play in, they remain content peddling their delusions of grandeur.

Read about the Tulsa massacre. What's reported, who all was involved? It's disgusting and its sad how people made a place for themselves, fought for their freedom as well as for this country, and then create their own Black wall street, abd the first chance they get? Racists destroy it. This also ties to when the KKK essentially overthrow the government and went on to murder a ton of black people getting into politics.

So you see stuff like this in American history, you have a chance to tell a What if story through BP abd what does he do? Try to turn this wonderful place into the very thing it was created to be against and then turn said place into exactly what the west thinks it is.

tchalla wasnt background at least first two issues I read and seriously no shade but I think it has more to do with black lead characters being a hard sell in this market more than the other reasons you mentioned.

IDW has one book at 20,000ish copies. TMNT. Their next title is a Star Wars book at 11,000ish. Then the Marvel action stuff leads with Spider-Man around 10,000. It wasn't going to do big numbers. Doesn't matter who the lead was.

The book is clearly a molding of 616 and MCU. I'd say it's a separate universe entirely.

Oh right let's get back into that tired overused excuse which has been proven to be false.

T'Challa was shown to be less of a lead abd more support in the IDW book. He also was shown to not have super genius intellect as see when Shuri was doing everything (literally everything) to figure out the issue and he was simply reacting to situations. There was also the conversation about how the habit worked between him and Shuri abd Shuri abd Okoye.

If the focus was Shuri it would of been a better book. But again, don't title a book called Black panther and then not make him the driving focus
