    Some Monday morning tidbits:

Don't blame NFLPA for demise of AAF

The sudden death spiral of the Alliance of American Football has been blamed, by some, on the unwillingness of the NFL Players Association to loan bottom-of-roster players to the upstart league. That’s a flawed argument. The AAF failed not because it didn’t have access to NFL-caliber players but because it started its only season without enough money in the bank to finish its first season.

The Washington trade for Keenum boggles the fucking mind really. He was gonna be cut anyhow and go into free agency. Not many teams would be demanding to sign a 32/33 year old QB anyhow and they could have saved the draft pick and still paid him the less amount they did. Trading for Rosen after this would show what a really fucked up team this is.

Also learn how this impacted players like Boomer Esasion , Steve Young and others.

    - The whole situation with Steve Young led to a situation which impacted the Bengals as we see. The Bengals were gonna draft Young #1 overall in 1984 and make him backup Ken Anderson a season or two. Young did not want to be a backup QB and decided against that move so he signed a $40 million dollar deal with USFL.

    - This had the Bengals trade picks with the Patriots who didn't need a QB. But they wanted Irving Fryar (WR) so he was selected 1# overall. But they signed him weeks earlier already to stop him from going to USFL. Also 3 Nebraska players likely would have went 1-3 a 1st in history and its never happened either.

    - The whole deal with Bengals led Boomer to fall in the draft. As he told his agent he had no plans to play for the Colts since he was a proud Maryland resident and saw the move being ****.

    - The NFL realized that the USFL was not gonna be around long due to the way it was being ran so they instituted the Supplemental Draft to bring in USFL players. As they knew that influx of talent would ripple through salaries and cause a big issue. So they had a draft and Young who would have been a Bengal in 1984 ended up becoming a Buc in 1985.
The NFL basically went to war with the USFL from the start. It never had a chance, no matter who backed it or how much money it had. Not in the 1980s it didn't, before social media that could fully expose the NFL's obvious (in retrospect) shenanigans.

ESPN years earlier ran a 30 for 30 on the USFL and brought up some things with it. The USFL had a decent TV deal for spring football as a starting league. It also drew some nice attendance and one team "The Bandits" in Tampa Bay was better than the actual Bucs at the time comically and drew the highest attendance. John Basset (owner) wanted to go with the Dixon plan they all agreed on originally.

    - Smart spending and keeping salaries within reason.

    - Trying to get franchises in US and Canada. (Canada government pushed that one away as they felt it would hurt the CFL)

    - Staying in spring and using TV revenue to make the league last.

And it would have worked really had they not had owners suddenly go spend crazy and bring in Donald Trump who did that to a huge degree. TV wise they had solid deals with ABC and ESPN. Its just the move to the fall by Trump killed that.

Of course the NFL wasn't innocent here as some franchises were forced to move due to stadiums being used. But overall the USFL had a great product on field and was actually working if the owners hadn't fallen in for Trump's promises.

Speaking of that 1984 Draft ...more has came out it seems...

    - This was Mel Kiper Jr's 1st NFL Draft he ever worked onscreen. He had been putting out his Draft Guide since 1981. Kiper was 23 years old and had never been on camera before he claims til this happened.

    - Carl Banks wasn't applauded as a draft pick as the Giants were loaded with LB's then but the GM and Phil Simms as we see didn't care. Simms said the team made the right decision on LT a year earlier and they did here. Even Banks heard detractors about it as a friend asked , "How will you see the field with all those LB's already ?"

    - And the big one...Bill Parcells wanted to draft Reggie White in that Supplemental draft of 1984. The one with USFL talent as Parcells said it came down to Gary Zimmerman and Reggie White. 2 future Hall of Fame players. He was over ruled and the Giants selected Zimmerman who would go on to be traded to the Minnesota Vikings.

    NFL News ...

    - The Washington Redskins have told they are not working a trade for Josh Rosen right now.

    - New England is busy as well. They are looking at Demaryius Thomas (WR) as he is visiting the team and signed Austin Seferin-Jenkins (TE) to a 1 year deal. They are also looking at QB's to possibly look at draft wise with Daniel Jones and Will Grier coming in for a meeting. Jones is considered a 1st round pick while Grier could be a mid-round selection.

Lawyers: Robert Kraft will suffer ‘irreparable harm’ if video is released in Fla. prostitution case

Well, maybe Kraft should've considered that before slinking down to some spa for a hook-up when he could've had hookers slipped into his private digs instead. I have ZERO sympathy for the dope who proved that money can't buy you smarts.

'Irreparable harm' - ya think? Amazing how the harm is tied to a video release rather than his decision to go slumming it with the poor sex-slave prostitutes at bargain prices in a mini-mall.

She wasn’t a sex slave. It already came out that the two girls Kraft was with were the manager and another licensed masseuse who had a valid NY ID. The authorities also said neither was under suspicion of being trafficked.

In fact neither the FBI or ICE are pursuing this matter any longer and it’s looking like there was no trafficking angle and it was just a way for the authorities to get a warrant (which now is going to cause legal issues).

Basically Kraft’s mistake was going to some cheap massage parlour for a happy ending instead of paying 500-1000 for an escort

Ok, I had thought there were still sex slaves there, not that he specifically was with one. Good to know there were none at the establishment at all.

    Billionaire, right?

I would have had constant hot women running in/out of the GOLGO mansion 24/7 (delivered).

Honestly I'd rather discuss actual football stuff rather than a rich owner paying for sex.

Everyone knows the whole draft legend of Bernie Kosar and who he ended up in Cleveland in the 1985 Supplemental Draft. But the whole deal was more complicated than imagined.

    - Ernie Accorsi was the GM of the Browns and wanted a marquee QB knowing the franchise needed one. He was the guy who drafted Elway and watched him be traded to Denver by the Colts . So he had his eyes on getting a QB. There was 2 in 1985 that really became big names. One was Doug Flutie and the other Bernie Kosar. Art Modell wanted Flutie and kept pushing for him. But Ernie steered him back to Kosar who he brought up had great arm , size and football smarts.

    - Getting Bernie however would be difficult. The Browns knew he'd be drafted in 1985 NFL Draft early. So as we see Ernie got his mind to working and sent early draft picks to Buffalo so they could get that 1985 Supplemental pick to get Kosar. That they could talk him into playing for the Browns since he was a hometown boy.

    - It was a gamble because as the video shows the Vikings had the edge from a Hall of Fame coach in Bud Grant to another coach in Marc Trestman that Bernie knew. But what swayed him was playing for the Cleveland Browns.

EDIT : Here is what the Buffalo Bills got for the Bernie Kosar trade -

    1985

    - 1st rd : Derrick Burroughs CB (traded down with Green Bay) - played 5 seasons became a coach
    - 3rd rd : Hal Garner LB - Played 4 seasons , left the NFL after an addiction to pain medication.

    1986

    - 1st rd : Will Wolford OT - Played 13 seasons for 3 teams. 3 Time Pro Bowl star , 2nd team all-pro.

    - 6th rd : NO DATA....this pick was likely traded as its not showing a selection here.

The Bills wiffed on Burroughs but they ended up with an all-pro in Wolford who anchored their offensive line for 6-7 seasons.

Seattle has signed Russell Wilson to an extension and made him the highest paid player in the NFL. Late yesterday he signed a 4 year $140 million dollar extension. Wilson will earn $107 million guaranteed from the deal and has a no trade clause. Its said Wilson set a deadline to get it done and the Seahawks were pushed to make this deal happen.

Well, that distinction won't last long, what with Jared Goff and Carson Wentz due for new deals in a year or so.
