I have understood that their Star Wars stuff is set relatively in publication order, although that is extremely loosey goosey.
However, to be totally honest, it seems like most series don't really account for whatever their protagonists are doing in other comics, maybe beyond a token reference or an assumption that they fit into story gaps (like how the stars of DC's Green Lanterns are also in Justice League, but, beyond a couple references to them being JL members, both series read as if the other isn't happening -- both have their own version of Jessica Cruz's first construct, for example.)

I think the in story reasion is either A the bright color's fits the books better and if Jean wants her team to inspire people then bright color's do the job better then her more menacing costume or B because trinary designed them and is a technopath there are tech upgrads in the costume's. Probably a combinations of both.
