To anyone who is still asking why I prefer last Jedi to Rise of Skywalker, I found Rey's back story more believable than her been Palpatine's grand daughter. what I consider one of the worst plot points in the movie.

I always felt out of the last jedi backlash, her backstory was overplayed. I think many fans had no issue with her being related to nobody important. JJ Abrams was very misguided too think fans wanted her to be a Skywalker or a Palpatine.

I never cared about her parentage until they labeled EPs 1 - 9 the Skywalker saga. Before that, I just assumed she was a nobody on a journey to become a somebody and was perfectly fine with that.

the rise of skywalker does not even make any sense. a good story that will fit this term rise of skywalker would have been for luke to help kylo ren become a skywalker again and actually succeeding at it. how rey fits the rising of skywalker does not have any logic to it, but nooooo. this Disney overlord thinks rey must be someone of importance.

Last Jedi may have had it flaws but it is still the best we got in the ST

I am one of the few that actually enjoyed Last Jedi. I prefer Rey as a nobody, instead of coming from a "force family". The next big question is who is broom boy's dad then? lol

In isolation, I actually liked the idea of Rey being somebody because of who she was in and of herself, not her heritage. In every bloodline or family, there's a first one to become famous. The only problem was that it was not what TFA set up.

I did like the way it was resolved to maintain the original premise but explain away the second movie and her adoption of Skywalker as her last name with Luke and Leia watching and more or less nodding for her to do it because family is more than blood.

Rey works just fine as nobody important until she is. She doesn’t need the heritage to be important to the universe when she’s already an active player in the plot.

You really could omit Palpatine entirely and miss next to nothing if all it amounts to is her taking on the Skywalker name.

Nice to find someone else also like The Last Jedi.

If there's one thing weird about her being a Palpatine, it's how could a man who was middle aged when Anakin Skywalker was young have a granddaughter ten years younger than Anakin's grandson?

I read somewhere that Kennedy wanted it to be all about Rey and her friends, hence the lion's share of screen time going to Poe, Finn and Rey, and that she also wanted Rey to end up alone as 'strong women don't need boyfriends.'
Hence the killing off of the last real Skywalker, both to quash the hopes of Reylo fans and establish a new era with new characters.

The problem is, none of these new characters are as interesting and fascinating as Kylo Ren/Ben Solo. I'd happily watch Adam Driver play him in a dozen movies or an ongoing series. I had enough of Poe after The Last Jedi, Finn after The Rise of Skywalker, and sadly I really really have had enough of Rey.

I doubt if I'll ever watch another SW film, series or comic which features that irritating trio as the sole characters. They send me to sleep.

As if Disney was going to put out an entire trilogy of Star Wars movies and not have the heroine be a princess somehow.

I prefer her to be a nobody or failing that maybe a modified clone of Palps. I simply don't care for the idea of the Force being dynastic (the Skywalkers were bad enough in that department), which is why the Clone Wars & Rebels cartoons represent my favorite periods in Star Wars (there were many non-related Jedi & Sith/Dark Jedi). Plus, if Rey is Palps' granddaughter it means he fathered (at least) one child a disturbing thought. *shivers*

To be fair the Skywalkers having any legacy was much more of an exception rather then a rule. In hindsight I think the sequel trilogy would've worked better if it wasn't made part of the Skywalker saga. The minute you undo the happy ending of ROTJ people are going to be concerned about that family.

I liked both. I think the dual narratives -- her having no past to speak of being considered worthless by her own family not bearing on her value or importance in the here and now and her being blood family to one of the most evil men in history not having any bearing on who she was or her being able to chose her path -- both have their merits.

Speaking for myself though, I think I found Luke's telling Rey that Leia knew full well that she was Palpatine's granddaughter and still accepted and mentored her was one of the more compelling moments in this batch of movies. While I think there's merit to the message that anyone can be a hero even if they don't have an important family tree, given how heavy Star Wars plays with destiny and legacy, somehow turning it all on its head seems to be a fitting message. Also, I think I like the build-up to Rey discovering her dark side past a bit more, since we get to see some of the effects it has on her and understand her fears of becoming her grandfather by the time she gets reminded that she's a good-hearted person and can choose to not be the next Sith lord.

Princess of what though? The empire she would have inherited is gone and that is very much a good thing. Unless they wanted to make her a villain protagonist, I don't think wanting her to be a princess was the motivation. Some writers are just not capable of telling a story about someone without talking about who they are related to.
