Default My favorite DC ongoing right now is JL8

I was just introduced to Yale Stewart's free online comic JL8 by Robanker. It's a whopping 269 issues in and it's one of my favorite celebrations of the DC characters I've read since Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier.

The premise is pretty straight forward, it's the adventures of the Justice League of America when they were 8 years old done in the style of a Calvin & Hobbes newspaper strip. It's not only funny, but absolutely nails each and every one of the DCU characters so perfectly and the ongoing soap opera has a shocking amount of heart and pathos for what is obstensively a DCU-themed riff on old comic strips.

I cannot recommend it enough for those who share my deep love for the DC characters, particularly Clark, Bruce, Diana, Hal, Barry, J'Onn, and Karen, who make up the core cast of characters. Fans of Power Girl may be a bit taken aback by her initial characterization, but, trust me, it pays off wonderfully as the character changes and grows.

Here's the first issue. Just click on the arrow icon for the nearly 300 more strips Yale Stewart has produced for this, all of which are a delight full of humor, heart & soul.

Hopefully, someone, anyone, at DC will take notice of this truly wonderful work and pay Stewart to publish it, because JL8 could easily be a great gateway drug to hook kids and adults into the DCU.

Probably the most fun I've had reading any DC story in a long time.

So many strips are so earnest and fun you just want to share each and every one.

If you have the opportunity, share it and read alongside someone in real time. It made the experience that much better.

Honestly, its not clear. It only says that Clark is an alien, if indirectly.

But its been on a hiatus for a good while though.

Stewart found out later she was his cousin and dropped it. I suspect he probably was exposed to PG around the JLI/E era where they were going with a different origin to her.

Clark doesn't seem to know he's an alien-- he refers to himself as a human who flies somewhere in the 200s around when he meets Lois and we learn Sam is up to something, so presumably he's got an arc coming where that bombshell is going to be dropped.

I bought the JSA print Yale put up late last year. It's on the wall in my living room currently.

    JL8 is fantastic.

Julie Schwartz isn’t the last of the cameos. There’s one later on that’s great.
