    Superman should look like this.

His quintessential look did not have that. Muscles are not necessary for Superman. He is in that level where the bulk or build does not matter. I imagine him as fat but not too fat, thin but not too thin.

This looks fantastic. Though some muscles can be used as visual to show that he is strong. It looks nice.

    Right.

That's why trying to create a correlation between appearance and strength doesn't work with Superman.

I thought Eric Close--circa 2000, when he was in his mid-thirties in NOW AND AGAIN and in TAKEN--looked like my ideal version of Superman. He's only 5' 11" but I imagined him as the Man of Tomorrow, if there had been a movie set in the 1930s or 1940s.

I dunno man, look at the guy's arms; they're as big as his head. By the standards of the time, that was the ideal physical build and Superman looked like a circus strong man in muscle as well as outfit.

Look at the second one. The first one is an indication. I feel his build is medium. Neither too fat nor too thin. Something like this.

    Another view.

My first contact with Superman was like this. He looks awesome with muscles. But i kind of prefer him like this.

Quitely's Superman is probably my favorite of all time.

I think DC said/used to say Superman is 6'3" and 225 pounds of really solid muscle.

But his strength comes from the power of a yellow sun and how his cells metabolize it.

With his height, weight and muscles mass, is that what makes him stronger than other Kryptonians?

The Shuster model, in its time, was a beast. Really he'd still look very strong these days, it's just that compared to modern styles, Shuster wasn't at all explicit. Though I can still almost imagine old timey parents covering the eyes of their children as they passed the newsstand, haha.

I tend to underrate Quitely. He's obviously very skilled, but I tend to think of his Superman looking saggy and old, and that's largely an exaggeration when it's not being directly compared to the art of a Gammill or a Grummett.

I'd prefer something along the lines of George Reeves, fit but not a bodybuilder. But, alas, when almost every female character could be a porn star and every male character could be a world champion bodybuilder, even if he's Reed Richards and works in a lab most of the time, a Superman who is less than Arnold in his prime would be thought of as wimpy looking compared to other heroes.

I'm also curious about this strange phenomenon where all the Superman actors (Chris Reeve, Routh and Cavill) actually work out and are muscular but the Batman actors (Keaton, Clooney, Kilmer, Bale, Affleck) wear muscle suits.
    Power with Girl is better.

Yup. He's pretty much my final word on the "what should Superman look like" debate. He's followed closely behind by Stuart Immonen (Secret Identity specifically) and Mitch Gerads whenever he gets around to drawing the big guy.

Garcia-Lopez, Grummett, Jurgens. A few examples of guys who nail it in my eyes. Clear, even slightly exaggerated muscle definition through the suit (abs, biceps, lats, the full guns), but not like a caricature.

Immonen's take is also great, yeah.

I particularly likeed how Clark was drawn during his teen years.

Ha! That's the exact page that I always have in my head when I think of his Superman. I even love the implied texture of his store bought costume. His and Quitely's just feel realer than everyone else's I guess, I dunno. Immonen's older Clark carries over what I like about his "Superboy."

When I first found out that Frank Quitely was going to be doing ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, I expected his Superman would be really chunky like in JLA: EARTH 2.

But he slimmed Superman down so he fit with the Weisinger Era feeling of ALL-STAR. Although I'd say his Superman was more Wayne Boring and less Curt Swan. Not that there's anything wrong with Wayne Boring or other artists that drew Superman with a huge girth. But I personally prefer Superman to be trim.
