    Default Terry Sloane Appreciation

    DC Forum Appreciation Thread rules:

    1) No negative comments about the honoree of this thread. It's an appreciation thread, not a non-appreciation one.

    2) No negative discussion about any competitors of the honoree of this thread (i.e. John Stewart in the Hal Jordan thread). No ifs, ands, or buts. Find another non-appreciation thread to do that, just not here.

    3) No negative comments about other versions of the character. For example, if you like the DCU version of Cyborg, but hate the DCnU version (or visa versa), just appreciate the earlier version and keep your comments about the latter to yourself.

The smartest man on Earth 2, Terry Sloane was one of the original 8 Wonders of Earth 2. After causing a mass genocide near the end of the Apokolips War, Sloan went into hiding, until The World Army re-employed him as their Head of Science. Now with his own hidden agenda, Sloane has his own plans for Earth 2....

First time I saw him, he was killed off. I'm glad they resurrected him later on.

Is this a thread for only the Earth 2 version, or can we express appreciation for the original as well? I really like Golden Age Terry Sloan/Mr. Terrific. But he's nothing like the Earth 2 character.

I have JSA All-Stars #7 with a story by Michael Chabon that deals with Terry and his brother, and it was very moving.

And I like the twist they put on Terry in Earth 2: Future's End, in how spoilers:
he not native to Earth 2.
    end of spoilers

When I started thats thread, I intended it to be for all versions. I just wrote about the E2 version in the first post because that was the one that I was most familiar with.

It was established quite earlier than that in Earth 2 #0, but yet the Futures End issue confirmed it.

    Cool, just wanted to check.

In that case, I have to say that I've only read a few of Terry Sloan's original appearances. He turned up from time to time during the JSA series thanks to time travel storylines, but the character was killed off back in the 70s I believe. So I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed the five reprinted Mr. Terrific stories in the JSA All-Stars archive. Terry Sloan is a man who is great at everything, and nothing is a challenge for him, to the point that he's bored with life and ready to commit suicide. But he ends up living a life of service to others, even if that service consists of putting on a costume and acting as a super hero. I love his positive attitude and the fact that he's not invulnerable or super fast or anything that would make life as a super hero easy for him. He's just smart and talented. He's a really unique character, and under appreciated I think, simply because he didn't survive into the post-Crisis universe and because so little of his original series is in print.

It seems like the sunshine yellow gloves were too bright and the yellow gloves were dropped later on. Mr Terrific and Wanda Wilson :

Really? I don't seem to remember any mention about it in issue 0.

Speaking about his first incarnation, I always found him a bit bland aside from having a pretty cool background, but that was mostly the case for Golden Age heroes.

The New 52 Terry Sloan started pretty cool when he was being written by James Robinson as a cold and calculating antihero/villain who wanted to save Earth 2 by any means necessary despite that they might have been terrible. Then Tom Taylor came on board an turned him into a much more of an egocentric jerk. Finally Daniel H. Wilson arrived and made him a complete egomaniac who doesn't really care about anyone but himself (basically a poor man's Lex Luthor).

I hope that future creative teams bring back the first characterization.

Here's one of my favourite panels featuring Terry. It just sums up the New 52 version of him so well. (Note the reference to his Mr Terrific days in the caption box).

Could Terry Sloan be Lex Luthor from another Earth?

Red Hair like Alex Luthor of Earth 2
    Smartest person on the planet
Seems to have a grudge against Kryptonian's

I had wondered that myself, particularly since the original is blonde. Maybe the idea was to make him Alex Luthor originally, before going with Terry Sloan?

Very intriguing...Most modern interpretations of young Lex do have a resemblance to Terry. Maybe his Mr. 8 costume is supposed to be his power armour?

Heh. My first thought back even when I started the series were how Ozymandias like he was written.

Now if DC wanted to he literally COULD be him. Though they probably won't do that.
