The upcoming new character Punchline is being hyped by DC as the next big character for the brand, being a replacement right-hand woman for Joker, taking over the role of Harley Quinn who has since deviated from the Joker so much that she simply isn't usable that way anymore and unlikely will be again. I guess they needed someone to fill that role now that it's vacant, hence why Tynion and co made her.
So it begs the question: Do you think Punchline will catch on?
I'm interested because I like her design, yet I kinda don't. I'm a guy, not ashamed to admit that I like sexy characters and she fits on that front. But one aspect that kind of seems weird is that she seems sane apart from the token clown motif, basically a stoic deadly ninja woman with some clown themes. Outside of that, it admittedly seems kind of odd that Joker just so happened to get another female enforcer to replace Harley, is there just a store for this sort of thing? Well, it's just funny to think about.
She does come off as a more stoic, deadly ninja assassin, no doubt to make her stand on her own and contrast Harley Quinn's sugary/bubbly personality. Just got to see how they execute it.
Anyways, I wonder if they're really going to push heavily for Punchline in both the comics, as a continuing force, and in other media where she appears in video games, animation, TV and whatnot. But also, for it to work, fans will have to like her and want to see more of her. If that part fails, it won't matter much. I remember how they tried to push Bluebird as a replacement to Cass and Steph, didn't work. So I hope she's well-written if they plan to make her a fixture and a legit character as opposed to someone forgotten.
Thoughts?
