Trump Appointed Judges Strike Down Ban on Conversion Therapy

A federal appeals court today overturned a lower court ruling and struck down local ordinances prohibiting licensed therapists from practicing the debunked “conversion therapy” on minors. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit issued a 2-1 opinion overturning Otto v. City of Boca Rotan, citing violations of First Amendment protections on freedom of speech in their decision. The majority opinion written by two Trump-appoint jurists was met with widespread opposition and concern from medical experts and the LGBTQ+ community.

“Conversion therapy is fraud,” Amit Paley, chief executive officer and executive director of Trevor Project, tells Out in a statement. “No matter how hard you try, you cannot change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. This so-called therapy has only ever proven to produce negative mental health outcomes and increase the risk of suicide.”
Both judges were appointed by Trump, and Lagao had been mentioned as a possible replacement for the late Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who passed away earlier this year. Her seat instead went to Amy Coney Barrett.

“Mitch McConnell and the Senate GOP have packed the lower courts with judges who are committed to undermining LGBTQ+ rights,” tweeted Mondaire Jones, the U.S. Representative-elect who will make history as one of the first Black gay congressman upon taking office in January. “They’ll be handing down decisions like these, which condemn LGBTQ+ youth to torture, long after Donald Trump leaves office.”
Disgusted at a ruling that would allow torture to exist as a protected 1st amendment right. And of course it would be 2 of the Trump appointed judges in the majority ruling. This is why so many LGBT were voting as if their lives depended on it this election. And the thought that these people that Mitch has rammed onto the courts will be making decisions about our lives for generations is horrifying.

Conversion therapy is evil full stop. That we as Americans cannot agree on that is disgusting.

I read a post a couple pages back where the person asked if the GOP supporting Trump and his claims of fraud will back fire in the long run.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. Trump and his puppets keep saying the election is a fraud and their votes were thrown away or changed etc... And that the Dems will do this in upcoming elections. So would some GOP voters think why vote in the future? what is the point if it is all rigged? I know the voter fraud wont scare away Dem voters because they dont believe in fraud as there is no proof. But the GOp who do follow this. Like are asked are they going to bother to try and vote in the future? As much as we hate Trump and his followers claims they may help the Dems in the long run.

We can only hope conservative voter disenfranchisement is the end result of Trump trying to **** all over the election.

Maybe the Dems should hire someone to push that narrative. Why should republicans have all the evil fun?

Luckily most of the people that are angling for a 2024 run don't really seem all that charismatic and certainly don't have that kind of alpha ape energy that Trump exudes, though who knows, in 2015 Trump himself seemed more like a sad sack has-been than anything, so I wouldn't rule out someone like Tom Cotton suddenly becoming this fire-eating rabble rouser.
I think you've diagnosed it pretty well. Fortunately, there's a growing supply of GOP figures who aren't keen to live through the kind of wreckage Trump's wanton power grab will yield.

Christ, I miss Rick Perry. Didn't see eye to eye with him on pretty much anything but nobody could say he lacked charisma. Even if it was just the alcohol/pain killers.

They can push the issue by appealing to the base that the GOP is trying to kae their right to vote away.

    That's not evil.

The Dems are being too passive about Trump's fascism.

Biden has taken to busking on twitter for transition funds when he could ask Pelosi to start a House investigation on that Emily woman.

Granted, Biden asking for a dollar to spare on twitter is something Onion Joe Biden would do.

Trump isn't a fascist, although he's certainly empowering fascists. Fascism requires a tautological vision of yourself as being superior, because you're part of a greater whole, which is greater because it includes superior people like you, thus justifying all manner of brutality towards your supposed inferiors.

Trump compensates for his pathetic insecurities by believing nothing is equal to his personal greatness. He is a part of nothing, because nothing is grand or great enough for him. He cannot see himself as belonging, in his mind - to bastardize Morrison - Trump Is.

Of course, actual fascists, being either too dimwitted to see Trump for what he is, or cynically exploiting the climate he is creating are thriving thanks to Trump.

I know pol.sci folks have a rigid definition of fascism and are wary about seeing it apply.

But in so far as fascism is overturning the norms, rules, conventions of liberal democracy for reactionary/authoritarian/populist reasons...Trump is a fascist.

Republicans are able to do this because they have several amoral billionaires funding a decades old multi media unofficial propaganda wing and a base who love blindly following leaders. That's not an option the Democrats have and even if they were to start that today it'd take decades before they got on equal terms to the GOP. People underestimate how much of an advantage this is for Republicans in doing anything.
