Semantics - the reporting/rumors yesterday were all about how WBD doesn't value HBO Max, that they were laying off the majority of staff and flat out not interested in the type of content it produced. On the investor call today you had the following (Bloys is the Chief Content Officer of both HBO and HBO Max):
So yes it's going away in the sense it's being merged into a larger service but that's very different from the type of "going away" described yesterday.
Indeed.
HBO Max and Discovery+ will combine into a single streaming service
The company is considering a free, ad-supported version of the combined streaming platform, Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav said Thursday on an earnings call.

HBO Max and Discovery+ will merge into a single streaming service, Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav announced on a second-quarter earnings call Thursday.
The media corporation did not reveal a name for the combined platform, which it said will launch in the U.S. in the summer of 2023, with other regions to follow in 2024.
Zaslav is believed to be more skeptical of the idea that streaming is the end-all, be-all of Hollywood's future. He is keen on big-budget spectacles that can lure audiences to brick-and-mortar theaters — like Paramount's "Top Gun: Maverick" did this year.
"We will fully embrace theatrical because we believe it creates interest and demand," Zaslav said on the earnings call Thursday, pointing to the box-office success of "The Batman" and "Elvis."
Zaslav is also said to favor reality programs and "unscripted" shows that are popular draws on Discovery-owned cable television channels such as the Food Network and HGTV.

Warner Bros. Discovery Execs Speak Out on ‘Batgirl’: ‘Our Job Is to Protect the DC Brand’
https://www.indiewire.com/2022/08/ba...eo-1234747818/“The Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group has fantastic IP and a great history,” Zaslav said. “Between DC and the animation group, together with the entire Warner library, our ambition is to bring Warner back and produce great high-quality films. As we look at the opportunities that we have, broadly, DC is one of the top of the list for us. Look at Batman, Superman, Wonder-Woman, Aquaman, these are brands known everywhere in the world. The ability to drive those all over the world is a big opportunity for us.”
“We have done a reset. We’ve structured the business,” Zaslav said. “There will be a team with a 10-year plan focusing just on DC. It’s very similar to the structure that Alan Horn and Bob Iger put together very effectively with Kevin Feige at Disney. We think we could build a long-term, much more sustainable growth business out of DC, and as part of that, we’re going to focus on quality. We’re not going to release any film before it’s ready… The focus is going to be, how do we make each of these films, in general, as good as possible? DC is something we can make better, and we’re focused on it now. We have some great DC films coming up. ‘Black Adam,’ ‘Shazam!,’ and ‘Flash.’ We’re working on all of those. We’ve seen them, and we think they’re terrific, and that we can make them even better. That’s what Mike [De Luca] and Pam [Abdy, Warner Bros.’ new motion picture heads] are doing.”
Zaslav added, “We’ve looked hard at the direct-to-streaming business. We’ve seen, luckily, by having access to all the data how these movies perform. Our conclusion is expensive direct-to-streaming movies, in terms of how people are consuming them on the platform, how often people buy a service for them, how they get nourished over time, is no comparison to what happens when you launch a film in the theaters. This idea of expensive films going direct to streaming. We cannot find an economic case for it. We can’t find an economic value for it, and so we’re making a strategic shift.”
Ultimately, Zaslav said, the objective is to “grow the DC brand, to grow the DC characters. But also our job is to protect the DC brand, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

I'm almost scared to believe it's real. can we actually expect DC to produce quality DC projects going forward? No more garbage?
I'm sure it'll take 2-3 years to really get going, but my biggest hope is someone like Matthew Vaughn on Superman. Really should be recast as well.
He says that he wants to protect the brand but slso say she cannot find a value for direct-to-streaming movies. So, what DC extra content other than theatrical movies will be on the platform? He says nothing about shows and put a kibosh on streaming movies which sucks.
Zaslav said if i rememeber correctly that anything over 30 million dollars will not be made as a tv show.
So you could kiss all those dc mini series hbo shows goodbye and the upcoming ones will not be made.
All the mcu disney plus live action shows cost over 100 million to over 200 million.
Some will get a second season, maybe a third,so some will not be limited series or just one season.
Peacemaker is getting a second season and most likely the last one,so it's not a limited series.
The green lantern hbo max series would cost 100 million each season for example,so it's not happening.
Now if they could make a dc show for 30 million dollars or less then maybe that show will happen.

View it as an investment in the DC brand. Only reason DC was so much more popular than Marvel pre-MCU was because of the DCAU. Kids who grow up on DC cartoons will likely be lifelong fans. They’ll go from the cartoons to the games, TV Shows, movies and (hopefully) the comics. It works for Disney, they get kids falling in love with the Disney brand from a young age because of animation.
