It might have been a complication related to his Kidney transplants.

Diahann Carroll, pioneering actress, Oscar winner, and singer has died at 84

Diahann Carroll, who paved the way for African American actors on television and the movies, has died at 84, according to reports Friday.

Hollywoodreport.com reports the actress died at her home after a long bout with cancer.

Carroll starred in films such as “Carmen Jones” and “Porgy & Bess” but she is perhaps best known for her title role in the TV comedy series “Julia” in which she played a nurse raising a young son.

I loved her on "A Different World" as Whitley's mom.

What a shame. I remember watching Julia (in syndication). RIP, Ms. Carroll.

Man, she was so gorgeous and talented. I can't think of a performance by her that wasn't topnotch.

    RIP

I can't recall seeing the show as a preschooler. Looking at the TV schedule from that time, the reason must have been It Takes a Thief and then later The ABC Movie of the Week, which my parents loved. The first time I saw her, however, was The Flip Wilson Show. I can even recall my father stressing the point to my brother and I that she wasn't just a beautiful black woman, but a beautiful woman - period. Now I thought it was kind of obvious even as a kindergartner, but I understood what he was driving at years later when I began to experience the racial side of things.

A great drummer in an era of great rock drummers, he will certainly be missed.

Damn. I had a nasty feeling that this was coming when I heard that he'd been rushed into hospital a few days ago. That leaves just Eric Clapton still with us out of that legendary power trio Cream. I'll have a play of Disraeli Gears or maybe Wheels Of Fire on later in honour of him.

A temperamental but brilliant drummer. RIP Ginger Baker.
