Focusing on the "ex-villian turned hero" angle is the best way to go for an MCU introduction.

Yeah, I'm not great with computers. I'll try and fix it. It's a pic of the George Perez costume that everyone thought was to much like a Christmas tree.
As far as friends go, I’d like to see Simon and Thor develop a better friendship. Hercules and Peter Parker would be great too. As far as romance goes, I think he and She-Hulk could make an interesting pair. Or a new character. Or he can stay single while figuring his own life out first haha

Yep. And he's also responsible for Thor not remembering those battles. We learned later that the Collector would also 'pluck' Thor from what he was doing at the time to lend a hand to the Avengers in times of great Crisis. I guess, the Collector would then restore Thor to the same spot-- minus his memory of his time with the Avengers.
A new Wondy article by Brian Cronin went up today! Beginning to think this guy might be a big Simon fan...

For bringing Simon into the MCU, it’s too late to tie him into Wanda and Vision. Those characters are already ingrained into the audiences minds now.
Let others here have said. Use the manipulated by a villain angle to bring him in. Like they did on the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Have him manipulated by Zemo or Enchantress. But use his brother Grim Realer like they did in that show. Have Simon be the reluctant guy on the Masters of Evil.
The only thing is he wouldn’t have the Avengers relationships he normally has had in comics, because by the time Simon enters the MCU, most of those characters will be gone already.

I think for a lot of us it marks the start of Wondy as a comedic character, and the end of his run as a cool new hero of unknown potential. In either of his green-and-reds his catchphrase was "my fists hit like Thor's hammer," whereas in his safari suit his catchphrase was more "I'm almost as strong as Thor." Which wasn't as good.
Also, it's slightly dorky and more of a non-costume - it's really a visual to reinforce the idea that this guy isn't cut out to be a super-hero.
