I reread The Trial of Gambit today and I noticed that he mentioned twice that his wife was dead when he joined Sinister. I'm confused about the timeline here because he was already an X-Man when Belladonna "died". And the Mutant Massacre was well before he joined the X-Men, right?

I don't have the issues in front of me, but I tried to do some digging around for you.

My guess is that if Gambit is referring to Belladonna being dead, it is because she is dead to him in his own mind, as they are no longer togather. That still isn't a good reason, as I believe that Gambit abandoned Bell after killing her brother, and didn't allow her to make her own decision as to whether or not she should leave with him, if I remember correctly.

It may just be a case of the writer or editorial getting the timeline wrong themselves.

In my opinion, tying Gambit to the Mutant Massacre was a stupid idea anyway.

Well ok then. I think it might have been mentioned another time after that so it’s basically cannon that he thought she was dead, for whatever reason. It does explain why he never tried to go back.

Interesting. I've heard the theory before, but not this much in depth. Definitely seems plausible and I like the explanation for why Sinister has always had a soft spot for Gambit. One nit-pick thing, though: wasn't it retconned that Gambit wasn't the Witness?
