I'm not sure what point you are trying to make here, but I've heard that complaint more. Iceman is more visible and known more though too. So its an interesting comparison. I wish both were around!

Midnighter was built up at Image where complainers and the echo chamber tend to ignore what they do. So when he arrived at DC-he already had a built in fanbase to support him.

I would have preferred a X-Men series in which Iceman was leading a new team of X-Men.

Now that the Iceman series is back, I would like a three way tension between Iceman, Northstar and Kyle with probably a romance between Iceman and Northstar.

Midnighter had a built in audience? No one, especially outside of fanboys know who Midnighter is. Iceman is an original member of one of Marvel's most popular titles, starred in a cartoon, movies, and featured in countless games. That much more a reach to build an audience than The Authority's less than 100 issues and his Wildstorm series of 22 issues.

The biggest difference is some fans can't get over the fact that Iceman came out later and wouldn't support the title based on that alone. There were many fans of Iceman who protested the fact he was gay at all. Midnighter was able to escape that, but I wouldn't say his audience of fan base is bigger than Iceman's.
