February 9 to April 22, 2019
Superman and Wonder Woman are two of the most beloved icons in American pop culture. Created in times of economic adversity and world war, these characters quickly emerged as beacons of American morality, representing the ideals of truth, justice, and the American way.
Men of Steel, Women of Wonder is a new exhibition developed by Crystal Bridges' Assistant Curator, Alejo Benedetti, that examines art world responses to Superman and Wonder Woman ranging from their Depression-era origins to today’s contemporary artist interpretations. The exhibition features over 70 paintings, photographs, installations, videos, and more by a wide range of artists.
Offering fresh perspectives on these cultural icons and tapping into our current national love for superheroes, the artists in Men of Steel, Women of Wonder use Superman and Wonder Woman to explore national identity, American values, social politics, and the concept of humanity in an exciting, thought-provoking, unforgettable exhibition.

Written by Elliot S! Maggin himself. I love this.
And yes, Superman of canon is a younger man and a guy who has not begun to even live and fulfill his potential. We are talking about a man who can live to 1000 years or millions or billions depending on the fan service. This makes a young Superman seem a kid or teenager really, who has yet much to learn. The idea he can make definitive statements about life at such a young stage just shows he has a very narrow minded view and he is not open to learning or evolving. One cannot be so arrogant to think you know life, seen all that life has to offer , and make judgement about life at 40 if you can live for millenia. Worse is when they claim he is so long lived and the guy talks the same way, acts the same way a 35 year old does. Just as idiotic as living 1000 years and coming out with no sign of maturity and proper wisdom. I like KC because it gives us consequence and a real sense that these people lived and learned. Maggin fleshed Diana out and made her more layered because we got more time to spend with her. Intellectually honest. Superman needs this. His ideas of truth is not truth. It is hiding, deluding himself, trying to suppress who he is to fit in with humans when he is not human, though he is loyal to them and loves the earth and its people because he is a kind good being. In KC he gets this too. That is why he asked Shazam to decide the fate of the world. It makes total sense a mature Clark eventually ends up with Diana. It's like he finally grows up and left boyhood behind and is sure of himself and what his role is that he finally can embrace being with his equal.
