Batman's origins: the pain of losing his parents to a thug was so great that it motivates him to become a crime fighter. Because he suffers from trauma, he doesnt want others to suffer like him.

This remains my favorite summation of Bruce Wayne and Batman as a human being in under a minute:
Like action, adventure, rogues, and outlaws? Like anti-heroes, femme fatales, mysteries and thrillers?
I wrote a book with them. Outlaw’s Shadow: A Sherwood Noir. Robin Hood’s evil counterpart, Guy of Gisbourne, is the main character. Feel free to give it a look: https://read.amazon.com/kp/embed?asi...E2PKBNJFH76GQP
Batman: "I've always suffered".
He will not stop until he gets rid of the crime that took his parents' lives.

This might be a bit of a stretch, but eh. I just finished a portrait of Cameron Kane, one of Bruce's great-great grandfathers:

Specifically, this is the picture in Philip Kane's office during Zero Year.
Bruce is on my list of characters to create in 3D, and making Cameron is a step in that process.

Being Batman is a sacrifice of personal happiness.
Bruce cant simply be Batman and have a fulfilling love life at the same time.
His secret identity as Batman, his strong devotion to crime fighting, the possibility of having those close to him being targeted by his enemies.
Should he let those close to him become involved into his crime fighting career? No, its not just a career, its a crime fighting life.
Batman understands the pain of losing loved ones and does not want others become close to him and suffer from the same pain of seeing him go down and he wouldnt want to see them go down because of him either
This is why Batman struggles between his love life and crime fighting life.
He just cant allow others to suffer from the same trauma he is suffering from.
