Question Why do people overlook Spider-man hitting Mary Jane when she was pregnant?

Various Hank Pym threads always come back to the slap. It's ALWAYS the slap and how people think Hank Pym should be further punished for this. That he lost his man card, that he is unworthy of being an Avenger, that this awful act 100% taints the character to the point it was blown up in the Ultimate universe to a flat-out beating.

Why does Spider-man get off freely when he hit Mary Jane while she was pregnant?
In 2007 we had OMD removing Mary Jane's pregnancy from the timeline because reasons, so if everything is the same excluding the marriage and her pregnancy than Peter still assaulted Mary Jane. Why doesn't this get brought up not only in-universe but not here either? Spider-man hit Schrodinger's pregnant wife and we are all okay with that? I hate to mention double standards but I'm pretty sure there has to be to a degree between these two franchises. Even the movies Spider-man had still struck Mary Jane, but this does not taint a franchise in the same way it had affected everything else associated with Hank Pym. Even if this was 100% removed from continuity, the comic was still published, can still be found in stores, and scans can still be readily found of this material. It still happened.

I'm genuinely curious as to why the Spider-man franchise gets a pass, but the Avengers/Ant man/Giant man/ and Yellow Jacket franchises do not.

In all fairness MJ got in the way thus I deemed Peter striking MJ an accident... Hank slapped Jan deliberately.

Spider-Man is popular, so when he does something evil, it's blamed on the writer and forgotten. Pym is unpopular, so when he does something even slightly controversial, the worst possible interpretation sticks to him like glue.

Mary Jane was the enabler on this. She was a manipulator and tricked Peter to marry her.

raw tonnage of stories. He is everywhere and has been for ages. Hank is primarily just one of the avengers.

Reed hit Sue once too. But the difference between those two and Hank is that quite frankly Hank is ONLY known for one of two things ... hitting Jan and creating Ultron. When that's essentially the only thing about you, it casts a pretty big shadow. Whereas Reed and Spider have done so much it's almost hard to make any one thing they have done stand out.

and Reed wasn't trying to hurt her. she wasn't even 'Sue' at that moment. Spider-man's just as guilty as Hank. but they were specifically making Peter a despicable individual because they wanted to write him out of the story. they thought that the sane reaction to seeing a character beat up a woman would be to turn against that character.

I was under the impression that Jim Shooter meant for the slap to be accidental and Bob Hall drew it wrong but there wasn't enough time to redraw it.

Didn't Mary Jane start out as a harlot? Still hitting her when he thought he was a clone was nothing compared to Hank Pym's atrocious slap, because Hank Pym knew he was Hank Pym and Janet was his wife. Spidey doesn't. That makes Pym a wifebeater, but not Spidey.
“If you want to really see a road map of where our movies will be (going) in the next five, 10 or 20 years, read the comics,” says Joe Quesada, Marvel’s chief creative officer. “Because they’re almost always a precursor to what’s on the horizon in our cinematic universe and our television universes.”

Are most of this thread's participants FAMILIAR with the Pym slap?

It was actually a mistake, but went down in lore. Hank Pym is forevermore a wifebeater. In ANY reality.

I don't think being a fun-loving, sexually forward, gal makes one a harlot...

A lot of writers are incredibly lazy and will not do research on Hank so only know a few minor things on him.

They also want to be edgy and controversial and tackle "adult" concepts.

So the answer is: a lot of times the writers are lazy and they suck. *shrug*
