People who joke about those "boycotting" this hardware chain not knowing a socket wrench from a sock don't know that, worst case scenario, got relatives who do. My brother gets pissed when the workers at our apartment mow wet grass as it causes the rotary blades to come into contact with liquids, causing corrosion and requires replacement.

I may not be hardware handy but that's due to my tremors making it a challenge to hammer stuff, but I can identify different types of saws and know how a store is divided.

That sounds fine and good, particularly as more and more conservative Islamic countries should be under fire for upholding the outdated Sharia, such as Brunei recently making homosexuality punishable with the death penalty.

The problem is this boils more down to, "do you have money? No? Then screw you" than it does with striking a blow against regressive policies based on religion. Hell, I don't even think the average person can find Mauritania on a map.

Besides, there's more to it than that in the country as why slavery is rampant.

I don't think I had ever heard the name Mauritania until seeing the initial post, and while I am not overly plugged into international events, I never considered myself overly ignorant either. Although my knowledge has always been better when dealing with Europe and Asia than Africa.

I'm only quoting what's in the article. If you do an internet search you'll find various articles in regards to slavery and sharia law but not from the mainstream media. I didn't know about slavery in Mauritania until today. The muslims conquered and colonised North Africa around 647 ad. They are not indigenous to Africa. They are from the Middle East. I assume that this is when slavery was installed.

I was watching old clips of Michael Parkinson interviews, and saw one of him interviewing John Wayne.

John Wayne must have been expecting usual flattering showbiz interview (dear old Michael Parkinson has churned out plenty of those)..but Mike on this occasion asked a really tough question on John Wayne’s part in the Macarthy “witch hunt years”.

Wayne can’t have prepared for it...but dealt with the question exhaustively, politely, and honestly.

I still ended up thinking John Wayne was in wrong on the particular issue...but my respect for him increased.
