The major comic publishers are comic book creators first, and businesspeople second. The creators with their preferences, run the business, and create according to their own preferences. But it's also part of the problem as well. DC/Marvel need to make shorter story arcs, not get too binding with continuity where you need a reboot to undo something, etc. to reach to a wider audience than the committed fanbase that is part of the smaller, shrunken, audience they have had since the late 1980s/ 1990s.
