Aren't we all asking where she is these days (and most of us have been for some time now)?

I wish they'd just cut us some slack and bring her and the Society back already. What are they waiting for?

One possibility is they are afraid Karen's bombastic nature and statuesque appearance (her famous "boob window" for example), her basically being a sex-positive feminist allegory, will offend many non-comic book fan puritans today. They might not want to endure a backlash.

That said, our seasonal pitch sessions for Karen are always a highlight for me; I love the creativity and love for this character everyone shows. Some of what y'all come up with is highly detailed, carefully considered, imaginative and fresh but loyal to the source material....I'm always impressed.

I sometimes wonder if DC shouldn't try to monetize fan fiction. I'm not into fanfic and have rarely ever read any, I know nothing about that whole thing, but *some* of it must be good right? If there were a system to sift the quality out of all the dross and somehow market it....that'd be a way to make a little extra bank, engage the fanbase, put attention on rarely used characters like Karen, maybe even scout for talent. Seems like a potentially viable resource. Maybe such a thing wouldn't work, like I said I'm not a fanfic guy, but there seems to be a big audience for it and that means there's a way to make money off of it.
I'm more or less with you, but I would read some people's fanfics from this board just to see what they'd do. I think a lot of fanfic comes down to shipping or meeting an end rather than telling a rounded story so I tend to avoid it, but ultimately it can be good if the people crafting the narrative do so with care.

I have a story I'd love to tell with PG and maybe I'll write it for fun, but I don't think DC should look into monetizing fanfic. You could argue they could open a page called "DC Omniverse" and every user's page is a randomly generated world number, but then what happens if that number is used in a book? Or if that user ends up posting material they find distasteful or gets them in trouble? There's too many hurdles for a brand so protected based in a country as sensitive as the United States. If you have Karen pushing a heavy liberal or conservative talking point, it would piss someone off and DC would have their name attached. It's better that they stay away. At most, if someone involved sees work they like they can contact the creator to do work for them. This mostly happens with artists, but still.

All that aside, I really enjoy reading pitches here as well. I burned one a while back that was a team for PG and I kind of regret it because I would love to read it and now it's gone.

I think it's more she's a JSA character and they don't have that ironed out as well as trying to get Supergirl to work which is a simpler concept with fewer strings attached for adaptions.

Starfire is a sex-positive space babe with an hourglass figure and she appears in stuff regularly. Yeah, Karen's costume traditionally has the window and she can be a bit more blunt with her opinion but I don't think that's what's holding her back now.

DC could likely avoid any legal hassle with a simple "the views expressed by the author/s do not represent the parent company." I think you'd have to treat it kinda-sorta like a gig economy, where you're not really an employee of a organized company hierarchy. Or something, like I said I'm not a fanfic guy and I don't know much about how side gig companies and economics work (I really should brush up on that).

Keep an administrator around to ensure quality and content controls are being enforced so you don't end up with some creepy porn or hateful rhetoric and DC's ass is probably covered.

I dunno if such a thing is even worth considering, of course, and I'm not into fanfic anyway so it's not something I'd be too interested in, but I see a market here that isn't being tapped and I just wanna theory craft a business strategy around it.

And there's a few posters here who I'd read, for sure. I got nothing to share, really, other than a Superman character study loosely disguised as a script and a first draft Nightwing I co-plotted with another poster, but I'd definitely check out the writings of some folks here.

The big difference is that Starfire is presented as naive of Earth customs to the point of being almost child-like in her innocence whereas Power Girl is presented as a sophisticated character who knows exactly what she is doing. What I'm saying is it is far easier for Starfire to slip under the criticism radar than it would be for Power Girl.

Well that's what editors are for. It's basically a contract labor job, just a less well paying one.

I know what you mean. Most of my stuff is in my head or scribbled on notepads to avoid work at my job. What I have committed to document was mostly because I was home sick with Covid had to kill time in my room so I actually got to work on a Superman thing I've wanted to see forever. I've shown it to Bored who can confirm I'm a total hack.

I don't know that DC could get away with a disclaimer because while it holds up legally, I'm sorry to say that doesn't really matter to the public eye. At least half the country doesn't seem to understand that DC would provide a platform and that they'd be within their right to suspend any contributor at any moment without it impeding on their first amendment rights. I don't think DC even wants to court that kind of minefield to say nothing of the kind of content that would make them even take that course of action to begin with.

And if I'm being entirely honest, a Google search will show you what Karen turns into when fans take the wheel. It's pretty much a landslide in the favor of porn. That's true of a lot of characters, but sadly Karen gets it worse than most and I don't want her to get pushed further into that track or mangled by a bad pitch right now.

I am fine waiting for Karen to show up if we get something quality out of it. I will complain every minute, though, because I too am petty.

Starfire's sexual nature is often downplayed or non-existent in adaptations. Even the 2018 Titans show doesn't sexualize her as often as the comics do.

Ironically, Karen is one of the least sexually active superheroes in the DCU. In fact, I'm pretty sure she's still a virgin as I don't recall her ever having sex but I could be wrong on that. Her costume wouldn't even be seen as so provocative if not for the boob window which the artists and writers keep drawing attention to.

It does seem rather strange that DC still hasn't had anything regarding a JSA book. I think several of us have mentioned this before but they clearly went out of their way to trot out the fact that they were back from a continuity standpoint (i.e. Doomsday Clock, Snyder JL) yet nothing by way of an actual book. They've announced a whole litany of other books, Booster and Blue Beetle for example, yet nothing when it comes to JSA. Just seems weird. Unless maybe it was going to be something but it got lost in the mix with all the layoffs, editorial and staff turnover.

I was actually thinking more in terms of something like a movie pitch....with possibilities for more---than a complete work of fan fiction. But that an actual PG series might use an especially good idea to at least get inspired enough to bring her back. They clearly never had anything resembling a plan for her in the DCU other than "character to use when SG is otherwise occupied", or "Sort of important JSA member who never really impresses all that much". Her own series certainly failed to establish really anything the character needed done. It was largely unconnected stories with no particular direction for the character.

The only thing I can think of at this point is that DC is trying to shift the big name Leaguers towards an elder statesmen status, leaving the JSA without a niche to occupy.

I mentioned this on another thread, but you've got Diana ascended to divinity with Yara taking a lot of attention, Barry going multiversal with Wally taking over the Flash book (or whatever's happening there), and Clark going cosmic-political with the United Planets while Jon stays on earth. Obviously the big names aren't going away, but they do seem like they're taking a backseat when it comes to earthly concerns and won't necessarily be the focal points of the DCU. And if that's the case, the JSA are kinda left out in the cold.

It seems weird that DC would hint at the JSA as much as they have in the last couple years only to do nothing with them, but this wouldn't be the first time DC dropped their plans for something totally different, either.

What I find really disheartening is that Karen is not even featured on the character database of the main DC Comics website. Sucks being a Power Girl fan right now.

Here are the panels from her recent appearance...

Sad because there are so very many great directions you can go with her that are completely different from what Supergirl does, or SM, but DC and WB just refuse to see it.

They saw the potential briefly before the New 52 took her out back and shot her Ol Yeller style. :/

At this point, I don't think we'll ever see classic PG again, unless as Harley's sidekick. Or the organized JSA either. Stargirl galore of course because she's Johns' creation. It's funny, her skin in Injustice 2 the game seemed to be pretty popular, and her merch has done well over the years.
