Seems like a good plan. Have the portal open inside an active volcano. They might be able to work their way around that eventually, but I'm pretty sure the world would have all kinds of stuff ready to throw at whatever inched its way through that portal by that point.
Leading the way with a nuke-type weapon to clear the area doesn't seem like a particularly smart idea, either.
