That can mean "they tried but just don't get it" or "do they have any idea what the character is about?" or even "okay, they just needed a brand to wrap their story around".
So what's the most egrious film misrepresentation?

Howard The Duck
Batnipples or Craptastic Dork for me.
Wanted. The movie itself is enjoyable but it's a in-name only type of adaption.
X-Men: The Last Stand. It's basically a slap in the face for anyone who's read Dark Phoenix Saga.
Truly really not as bad as anyone who read any Mandarin storyline watching Iron Man 3, after all the hype in the trailer he was this bad ass supervillain terrorist. Dark Phoenix did not make her a joke, she actually was a threat unlike Mandarin that was just a Punked moment.
First few that comes to mind that were the most frustrating to watch, knowing what you know about the story in the comics.
Mandarin: Iron Man 3
Age Of Ultron
Deadpool: X-Men Origins
Thor Ragnarök
GOTG movies
X-Men 3
Batman and Robin.
Films like X-Men 3 and Origins were worse because they failed to be as complex as the original story. Origins Deadpool was just wrong.
Other films -Iron Man 3, GOTG, Batman and Robin, Ragnarok were silly shallow childish parodies of their source materials. The definition of dumbed down to the point it became offensive to your intellect knowing what you know about the source material.
the mandarin from iron man 3
