•Jesse Custer fulfilled a lifelong dream by partnering up with The Duke himself, John Wayne, for a Wild West saloon shoot out (see last issue), and naturally the "Good Guys" won. But Jesse now must hop a long, for he is on a mission to round up a posse in "The Town" to take down the occupying forces that are holding Purgatory and all its lost souls in limbo, literally. The old Cowboy declines the invite, says he is too old to fight the forces of evil, that it's tough enough for him to protect this bar, and thanks Jesse for giving him one last moment of glory, but before Jesse departs on his journey...his hero hands him his signature white ten gallon hat. "Pilgrim, one of these days you will ride off in to the sunset and this ol' cowpoke learned long ago that a man looks a hell of a lot better wearing one of these..."
•Jesse, the old withered man calling himself Grampa and the intuitive collie named "Lassie" make their way to the crimson river. "The Town" lies on the other side. "You'll have to take the ferry, Kid. Should be coming around any minute now. But this is where I get off. I'd be no better to you across this here River than I was at that Saloon or back when I was alive for that matter. Like I said, I am but a coward. But I did get you this far. Good luck, Son. Be what I never could. Save your poor Mother's soul." And with that, the old man was gone, as if turned to sand and swept away with the wind.
•As Jesse and his dog wait on the riverbed, they are joined by a strange sight, even for this place when a skeptical looking samurai sits seiza style in front of them, keeping a watchful eye, in silence. He only nods when Jesse asks if he is waiting for the boat.
•The large dark wooden raft approaches with a diminutive hairy creature in a cape paddling it in with a..is that a club? UNGA BUNGA! shouts the furry beast as if to signal an all aboard. The Samurai waits for the white hatted preacher and his dog to step on first, quickly in a flash of many pattered feet the swordsman joins them and off they go. The red water appears thick, oil like in texture. Jesse wonders how this caveman-like thing is single-handedly pushing them across. Halfway there, Jesse smells smoke. Unga Bunga - this time with much stress and concern in that yell. The raft is aflame, they will burn before they reach the shore. The samurai just sits patiently, surveying the scene...like lightning he draws his sword and *shiiing!* Shocked, Jesse and the Caveman watch as the lopped off head of Lassie bounces into the scarlet waters. The fire quickly disappears. The samurai speaks, "Demons..huh...come in all forms. Never trust them. That one lived like he died. A dog."
•"Who are you," Jesse asks. "I am Sanjuro Kuwabatake, you idiot. And you are the prophesized one, the Man of God who has come to save this wretched land. I will join you. Protect you. For my amusement. And a small price, of course. And so will this one, for his boat sails no more." And with that...Jesse finds himself in new company in a dangerous new land. His journey has only just begun.

Destiny has nothing but contempt for the chaos that the Children's presence brings and Delirium just likes being with her brothers....she worries me. Her love for her brother Destruction was strong, and her reasoning for accompanying us seems all too lucid for her. She is a wild card in this situation. There is a reason I dreamed of their coming. There is an Ending approaching but whose.
....Siblings squabbling! Siblings fighting! Siblings dying! Desire is far too much a complication when it comes to family affairs. Look Children, secrets and lies and an ocean of life's blood! What size wave would it take to wash all of the grains away? Perhaps Dream has dreamed the answer, shall we ask him?

Vicki the Vampire Slayer, Part 4

• Vicki & Montoya arrive at the library just in time to help Damage & Maria. Together, the 4 of them hold off the advancing vampires...but where did Harley Quinn disappear to?
• In the skies over Necropolis, Gar is losing his battle with the Vampire Superman...and just when things couldn't get worse, other Justice Masters - Vampire Wonder Woman & Vampire Green Lantern - arrive to try to finish him off!
• Leaving the library, Knox reveals that just before they were attacked Damage had stumbled across the soul-restoring incantation. But just as he hands the notes to Maria, Harley leaps from the shadows, knocking Damage unconscious & catching them off-guard. She quickly slashes Knox's throat. As Maria tends to Knox, Vicki & Montoya take on Harley but she proves too strong. Montoya is thrown to the ground, while Vicki is overpowered. When Montoya turns back around, Vicki & Harley are gone. In his final breath, Knox tells them where "he" is...
• Later, in the cathedral bell tower overlooking Necropolis, Harley approaches the throne of skulls. She presents the Slayer to her Master: Vampire Batman!

With one word -- "LAEVER" -- Zatanna tore open a portal. The light was blinding at first. So bright, even Clark shied away at first. The League stood ready to face what was on the other side, but suddenly the light dimned. In the background, I could see things happening inside; images, events, things that hadn't happened yet. I saw a breakout at Arkham led by Scarecrow. I saw Superman with green glowing eyes. I saw Lois weeping, and Titans Tower was in ruin. I saw the world crack in half...

And at the center, was a tiny ball of light. So bright, you couldn't look at it. I used the lenses in my cowl to send an image of it to the cave for analyzing. Just then, a massive dark figure leapt out of the shadows...our mystery killer wasn't in the portal after all. If I were a religious man, I'd have thought I'd just seen Death itself. From under the long black hooded robe, it reached for the bright object in the portal. Clark shot forward, but suddenly everything...moved. Almost like time, itself, shifted forward...

Dazed at first, Clark recovered & reached out for the robed figure just in time to stop him from claiming the object. Touching him burned Clark's hand, like a child touching a hot stove. Zatanna quickly closed the portal. The robed figure made no sound as it quickly grabbed her & disappeared, leaving nothing but her faint outline in the grass.

Dawn breaks. The Batman returns home. Sleep for 4 hours, then breakfast. A weekly conference call with investors that he barely pays attention to is next, followed by light training outside. He likes the smell of the grass, the wood of the trees. It reminds him of when he was a boy, and of long picnics with Vanessa once upon a time, long ago. He follows things up with a protein shake for lunch, a 40 minute power nap, and then he's off to Wayne Industries to put on his face.
As night falls, so too does the cowl and the Dark Knight is back on the streets. He keeps a watch on Brooke Hunter's apartment building. An heiress herself, to Hunter Fashions ("Be The Hunter In Your Life"), Batman begins to think DK has an obsession with rich young women. After an hour of surveillance, he spots her leaving the building...and if he were a normal man, her beauty would have stolen the breath from him. Long, wavy brown hair, perfect tan, legs that go on forever and a perfect smile. She enters a limo, but before Batman can follow he hears the police band: shots fired, residential, children present , 3 blocks away. Racing off to save the night, he can be forgiven for not seeing a red van leave an alleyway, following the limo.

Edward Malone is connected and keeps constant tabs on people he hates, such as James Burke. It doesn't take long to find where Vanessa is being held. Bruce always wished he could fight like his uncle Edward. There were many nights he lay awake thinking if had been uncle Edward in that alley, his mother would still be alive. Now, Edward and Peter are going to help Bruce and the Baron save Vanessa.
At the warehouse, the 4 men there to save Vanessa encounter resistance. That's to be expected. The fighting is fierce, but they save Vanessa. Edward Malone knows Burke and his tactics. "Learning to Fly Again" Part 3: Alien Nation
Shayera and a team of Wingmen return to the Towers and the Wing Command to report to Commander Tarvus Plynn about the new drug sparx that has made it's way into Elite society. But before arriving at his office, she and Ensign Ankon Kragger overhear two hidden officials talking about the drug and how they have to cover up their involvement! She quickly gathers her team to leave before they are seen. Shayera and Katar have long suspected corruption in the Thanagarian gov't and now she has information that it's connected to Down Side. Back in the N'ast Equs(Hell Pits), Katar, Hommy and Wingman Cpl Janus Raden continue their search for the crimelord behind the new drug. Someone new, an off-worlder, has come and taken over nearly half of the crime families here. As they approach a notorious club where the major players reside, they enter and are surrounded by an exotic mixture of armed aliens. Katar tells them to relax as he is here to meet the new Jakar(crimelord). Suddenly a figure steps from the shadows, an alien unfamiliar to Katar. He is a Terran from the planet Earth. His name is Lucas "Snapper" Carr and he is the new Kingpin of crime in the Hell Pits!
