Well the Captain really just wanted to make sure he was dead. It was actually quite good thinking ahead on the part of the Captain. Why are they sat on a giant spinning out of control bullet following a zombie-mad-Nazi-super-scientist through a portal to a realm of super crazy and very pissed off Kaiju sized God-Monsters that want humanity back as their convenient bite sized snacks? Listen if we examine every little detail this just falls apart, let's just pretend that there was no alcohol involved, no bucket of custard or rubber gloves and pretend that everyone on the rocket, sorry, bullet is a gawd-damned hero!
