Once again they seem to be streamlining all of Kara's prior canon and by directly referencing her history with Brainiac throughout the various continuities

Really Kara was the MVP for me this issue and it seems she has more a important role to play in this event that I initially thought so I'm hyped to see that play out, again she has movie coming out it only makes sense for writers to start centering her more

Kara was kicking ass and taking names this issue, Williamson writes her well:

Since Brainiac 2 shows up in the backups I’m guessing that Kara’s secret date at the start of the arc was Brainiac 5. Williamson is treating most of Johns run as canon, maybe he might bring back the Retroboot Brainiac 5, or use the Bendis Brainiac 5 since Bendis teased a romance between Kara and Brainiac at the end of his Action run.

To remind her of her losses, was my assumption when I read it.

Anyway, cool issue. Always great to see Kara in the spotlight. Interesting that we're bringing Coluan survivors and Brainiac's son to this story, makes me wonder if Vordan is correct and the date is indeed Brainiac 5 (I had assumed it was just filler dialogue but then it was brought up again)

Yeah, it's been mentioned in multiple titles so I assume the identity of the date is going to come up again.

If only we could read those past stories that connect to this and enhance the history of who Kara has become....but DC wont tell us what actually matters

The Johns Brainiac story with Kara in it definitely counts.

They kind of look like they're being roboticised by Doctor Robotnik (Sonic the Hedgehog's enemy).

Who knows what's really going on!

In my second year at DC, the sales for Supergirl were way down & they were considering cancelling the comic. I noticed a comp of Gen 13 on my desk featuring the art of Ed Benes, and suggested to the mgmt that they put him on Supergirl b/c it would give the character a fresh look for a younger audience.

Sales & attention skyrocketed after Benes came on board, and Supergirl (both the comic & the character) was on the radar of readers again. The “look” of Supergirl overall moving forward was also changed to something more bodacious—a *direct* result of the success of the Benes art. Originally brought on for interiors, he quickly ended up doing the covers as well. An overall trend towards similar art & other poached Wildstorm artists then impacted a number of other titles at the publisher.

This new artistic direction, in turn, was considered in some feminist comic book circles as offensive, emblematic of everything they were fighting against, and often very publicly used as a symbol of DC’s misogyny. The Benes art on Supergirl became a prominent talking-point in these heated debates, a “rallying cry” if you will.
…I was just trying to save the book! *♀️
