we can be heroes, just for one day
If Jean ever stuck with a codename id say Phoenix
X-Men Forever
They already should have had her trademark registered. Glad they got around to doing it.
I'd go with the quadruple play to cover all the bases: JG, JGS, Phoenix & Marvel Girl. They should know better than to predict what they may want to use down the road and all of these names have already seen significant usage in print.
WAAAAY too late now for a writer to even try to give her a new codename.
Phoenix is the only one that remotely stuck but now she just totally rejected the PF..... sighs
Forget the old ways - Krakoa is god.
OBEY
It's an iconic name. Why go for something less recognisable? Even hip-hop artist Jean Grae adopted her name in tribute to the character, showing it can be cool and powerful without being a codename.
Marvel Woman?
^
They already got Ms. Marvel. So probably wouldn't work to have 2 Marvels running around.
Could Call her Big Red lol
You misunderstand what they are trying to do: They are not trying to trademark the name "Jean Grey" (that's not possible). They are trying to trademark a comic book called "Jean Grey". It's even writen in the first sentence of the article.
If you prefer, it's possible to register the "Jean Grey" logo (not just the name) so that someone else can't use something similar that would lead to confusion between the two produces. They can also try to register the "imagery" of the character itself (again so that someone else can't use a similar character that would lead to confusion between the two). But they can't just trademark a common name as it's not distinctive enough. Just think about it: there is good chance that someone call herself Jean Grey. Would she have to change name or infringe the trademark?
That's why DC could publish a comic with a character called "Captain Marvel" even if Marvel trademarked a book with that name. But DC couldn't call their own book "Captain Marvel" as it would infringe Marvel's trademark. Trademarks are to protect a distinctive brand/produce so they expire if their owner don't use them every so often. That's why Marvel had to start publishing a comic called "Captain Marvel" else DC could have got it back.
Copy and paste from the Jean Grey topic :
That brings the question : what codename for Jean ?
Marvel Girl is stupid for an adult woman. Marvel Woman is no better.
I guess Marvel will go all 90's on Jean, keeping her code nameless.
Her best codename is Phoenix. That's why previous editors gave her the imagery AND the codename (even if Jean didn't have her Phoenix powers or Phoenix Force)
The Phoenix name and imagery belongs to Jean. Whatever Rosenberg said in PR... I don't have hate for him. I have the feeling that the "direction" of PR was heavily mandated by the editors. (New editors who always think they will do better, and never learn from the past.)
About the code name, maybe Marvel can give Jean claws and call her Wolverina. (worst name ever, isn't it ?)
As having characters with claws is the new STD at Marvel (after giving the phoenix force to any character)
Marvel, house of recycled ideas.
Phoenix is her best code name. I remember watching the 90's cartoon intro and wondering why Jean didn't have a Code Name
Four Marvels. You forgot about Carol (Captain Marvel) and Noh-Varr (Marvel Boy). The Avengers cartoon even joked about it. Someone called one of them Marvel and Carol and Kamala didn't know which of them was being addressed!
Yeah - that's why Carol's pretty much immune from cancellation, it's not just the movie. I know she is losing her book for a while after the current arc. But she'll be back later in the year. Kamala was actually given the Ms Marvel name for the same reason - with Carol now as Captain, they needed a new Ms Marvel to protect THAT trademark (otherwise, what's to stop DC giving the name to Shazam's sister Mary - her usual codename Mary Marvel was never a good idea and the New 52 version doesn't have a codename at all).

I hope the name Jean Grey continues to get denied by the trademark office. It's to common of a name and if they let it go Disney would take full advantage, due to the first go around.
Trademarking is a complicated practice and I'm certain their lawyers gave them a heads up that "Jean Grey" might get a no. What they should have done is placed a discrepancy stating that they do not claim no one else can use the name "Jean" or "Grey" . It still would have covered them for being the only company to use the name on a comic. They would have to file again for things like tv, apparel, and so on under the same clause but the item probably wouldn't have gotten turned down.
