Green Lantern John Stewart Appreciation Thread

Bro, John is being written as the safe Black guy who won't offend anybody.

Which is one of the greatest problems with the character today.

Honestly, I wish writers would read back to the character's origins and bring back some of what made Stewart unique at the time of his creation.

The whole "good soldier John Stewart" thing is tiring and frankly boring.

John reminds me of the loud, cranky Black police captains in those action comedy movies where he gets to shout at the detectives and orders them not to do something only to have them ignore his orders and do their own thing.

That's the set-up for the current arc.

Yeah, Van Jensen had a much better take on John. It's only when he's written in the same book with Hal that his personality begins to take a backseat.

John was never meant to be an easy going nice guy who takes a lot of crap.

RV has these guys acting like GI Joe characters from the 1980's. Not a whole lot of personality being utilized.

This level of unprofessional behavior is really bad. Some of those lanterns are the best of the best. If this crisis was broadcast across the universe, I'd have very little confidence in the GLC.

If every lantern comes back alive, then this is poor storytelling.

Agreed, Rumble. I know some others will say Robert Venditti trying to give all characters equal treatment, but that isn't 100% true. Yes, he does focus on John and make him at times have a strong presence, which is good, but when I see John NOT having any appearances in a couple of issues, then we have a problem. I don't think that Robert Venditti has anything against John. I think he does like John, certainly more than most previous GL writers, but I think that editorial has something to do with some of this.

Yea, it's not really equal treatment as much as it is equal amounts of fluffy platitudes they throw at each other in the times when they're all in the same room... before Hal/Kyle go off to do their adventuring while John/Guy take the next couple issues off... lol smh
