Same way we've been doing it for decades. Characters need feats so I can win arguments against other fandoms.

I suppose I haven't been in comics fandoms for decades, so I missed that memo.

Good thing a lot of us have also talked about pacing issues, character voice issues, character motivation issues, art issues, plot issues, and many other things.

But sure, go off man, focus on one aspect so you can feel intellectually superior, that you, Dude with Sentry as the avatar, judge cape comics on more than simple comic book things!

There's no need to be so presumptuous and hostile.

To be clear, I wasn't making a refutation of those other points. That was just you projecting. I can't actually say I'm a fan of Coates' run – it didn't hold my interest so I hopped off well before he went to space.

But "lack of feats" is just a vague and non-substantial critique and does nothing to the Coates-skeptical side of the equation look stronger.

Find me ONE PANEL showing the Wakandan army... not a squad of HZ, not two guys in black robes with spears.. doing ANYTHING in season 1. Hell, even in issue #11, the supposed final battle against Tetu, the army seemed composed of a handful of GI: JOE-looking greenshirts that ran screaming from a handful of unarmed guys with glowing green eyes. If we believe Coates, the sole extent of the Wakandan military are about a dozen guys who couldn't fight off a Boy Scout troop.

A far cry from this:



The thing is, particularly in that first arc, Coates wanted to tell a specific story, but didn't want to put in the work to justify any of it.

We were TOLD that the army was stretched thin. We were TOLD that things were so bad outside the city that warlords were able to carve out their own little pleasure treehouses. We were TOLD that M'baku's brother was villainous enough to justify killing.

Told. Told. Told.

But when the time came to actually CONFRONT any of it, the payoff was always frighteningly easy. Zenzi's mind-control (or whatever it was... he kept redefining it) was defeated by a Wakandan TED Talk. The unrest in Wakanda... just sort of went away. The Jabari... lost their sovereignty so the Midnight Angels could steal a homeland. And since then, all they've done is show up when the battle is over.

But wait! He's told a generic space opera story! That's SO groundbreaking! I love the epic battles... that we were TOLD about. "D

Speaking of Madam Slay what was the last time she made a appearance? The Iron Man annual where T'Challa first beats Killmonger? Or did she show up in the Priest future story with the other villains where T'Challa had a kid with Nakia?

She and Killmonger need to show up again together in a story some day, but not written by Coates.

She and Killmonger need to show up again together in a story some day, but not written by Coates.

And this is exactly why he was the very worst possible choice to write Black Panther.
