I too was surprised by the tone of the preview. I am going to purchase this book because I support the writer (I follow her and twitter and think she's very interesting), I love these characters and I think she will do right by them, and I love the character's costumes! I wish Jean and Storm could look so good.
I re-read the preview and I think the humor for Bobby was fine. Iceman is a little off beat, and it kind of works for him.
Apparently, so is Jubes.
Yep, Northstar says it himself, "He's just messing with you." Does cookie sheet = waX paper? Agree that it was a lil' like a mediocre SNL bit, that went on too long, and overstayed its welcome. The 3 of them kinda got a sibs thing goin' on tho, with JP bein' the more serious oldest, Bobby the middle man-child, & Jubes the baby of the bunch. Blob's obviously the no-fun uncle, or barely tolerated distant cousin.

I can totally picture Jubes looking out at the audience halfway through that conversation and saying “Can you believe this shit? This had better improve in the next few pages or I’m pullin’ a sickie.”
But I do agree with the others in this thread saying that Williams is just setting up a jarring dichotomy here between domestic mundanity and professional atrocity. Also, it’s only the first three pages, relax.
And after physically wincing at the art in the recent GenX series, this art looks ok to me.
ALL-NEW INTERVIEW ON X-TREMISTS
It's a great interview that I recommend listening to in its entirety, but here are the important bits:
-Some of y'all guessed it. The opening with the lighthearted fluffiness between Jubes and Bobby is gonna be jarringly contrasted with them screwing people's lives over
-The cookies are important
-Leah's portrayal of most of the X-Tremists shouldn't necessarily be seen as villains because they aren't in control of their situation
-This one is probably obvious, but the minis going from Marvelous to NextGen to Nightcrawler to X-Tremists to Prisoner X to Apoc & the X-Tracts is very intentional. Leah's book is a turning point in the narrative of this story by peeling back the layers of this utopia and anything we may have already found creepy about it. The last three books are meant to be from the POV of characters that are aware that they aren't living in a happy world.
-Moneta is about 19 and all in for Nate's fascist system. She won't be constantly struggling with what she's doing like the other members might and isn't necessarily someone to root for.
-Northstar is gonna be in full "I'm gonna kick your ass" mode after discovering he's been re-closeted
-fuck Nate Grey
