States with Democratic governors had the highest incidence and death rates from Covid-19 in the first months of the coronavirus pandemic, but states with Republican governors surpassed those rates as the crisis dragged on, a study released Tuesday found.

"From March to early June, Republican-led states had lower Covid-19 incidence rates compared with Democratic-led states. On June 3, the association reversed, and Republican-led states had higher incidence," the study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Medical University of South Carolina showed.

"For death rates, Republican-led states had lower rates early in the pandemic, but higher rates from July 4 through mid-December," the study found.

While I am more likely to agree politically with moderate Republicans, I would argue that terms like conservative (or progressive or liberal) should be relative. The term "moderate" shouldn't be seen as code for someone being correct. It just means there are a large number of elected officials to their left and right.

There are all sorts of reasons to tell a joke. She said it was a response to the sense that people were bullied into a particular type of conformity. Pretty much every joke you can think of can offend someone, if you go with the least generous interpretation.

One drawback with making this a cause for firing someone is that it can convince a lot of people that if they worked for Disney, their views would also seen as so disgusting as to merit termination, which may make them less interested in buying Disney products.

Honestly, a big reason why conservative humor always falls flat is that they inherently fail to grasp the principle that insult comedy only really works when you're going after people above you on the socioeconomic hierarchy, when you try to punch down at some of the most powerless individuals in society, then there's no absurdity or irreverence in it, it's just straight up being a dick for no reason. Asking someone to refer to you by your chosen pronoun isn't some kind of forced conformity, it's just basic human decency and trying to make light of the struggles of trans people, who have suffered a lot more discrimination and bigotry than conservatives ever will, is not really edgy or subversive, it's just kind of sad. And I don't think you have to worry too much about people boycotting Disney over this, Disney will be doing just fine as always.

The GOP won’t change until their base changes. Right now they really don’t have much incentive to change.

With Fox News and similar outlets being in league with GOP leadership and the messaging that mainstream media can't be trusted the base has come to believe whatever misinformation is fed to them. It really has become a case of the tail wagging the dog.

The base won't change until the feedback loop is severed. The base takes its cues from Conservative Media and Far-right Social Media >>> Conservative Media, and the Far Right are fed and bolstered by the GOP >>> the GOP depends on the base to vote them back into office >>>and around it goes.

Break the loop and the whole thing falls apart.

Perhaps we need some actual standards to be defined and enforced in media again. I'm talking about online outlets as well.

Tom Corbin survived both a primary challenge, and a Democratic challenger in 2020, and is likely to remain in office bumble-f***ing about until 2024.

Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill has reinstated a third-degree murder charge against the former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd.

Cahill granted the request from prosecutors to reinstate the charge after the former officer, Derek Chauvin, failed to get the state Supreme Court to block it.

Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd's neck for about nine minutes May 25, is already charged with second-degree murder, which carries a maximum sentence of 40 years, as well as second-degree manslaughter. The third-degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 25 years.

Cahill dismissed the charge last fall because he believed that the circumstances of Chauvin's case did not fit, but an appellate court ruling in an unrelated case established new grounds for it days before jury selection started. Cahill ruled at the time that a third-degree murder charge under Minnesota law requires proof that someone's conduct was "eminently dangerous to others," not just to Floyd.

Cahill said Thursday that he is now bound by a ruling, stemming from a recent decision involving the conviction of former officer Mohamed Noor, which stated that third-degree murder can be applied to acts directed toward a single person.

"I am granting the motion because although these cases are factually different — that is Noor and the case before us — I don't think it's a factual difference that weighs in favor of denying the motion to reinstate," Cahill said.

Cahill said a legal principal had been established as precedent: "When the intent is directed at a single person, then third-degree murder may apply. Single acts directed at a single person fall within the gambit of murder in the third degree."

Arizona Democrats are accusing Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone, also a Democrat, of helping kill a bipartisan bill that would require third-party investigations into police shootings.

As originally written, the bill, HB 2765, mandates that fatal police shootings and other instances where officers kill people be investigated by a different law enforcement agency, the state attorney general, or a county prosecutor from another county.
