Don't you know? Graphic novels are all about reflecting the human condition! The genre has grown beyond the childish escapism of the past. I have a stack of reviews from high-brow book critics saying so! And yes, the books don't sell, but that's because "popular" fiction is for people who cannot comprehend the genius of out narratives!
Throw in some aliens, and that was basically the setup for the IGEW. Coates pretty much ruined that concept.
The funniest thing (and you see it alot in Reddit) is people have this notion that "Just get therapy" is just some magical fix all. These characters are literally fighting gods and punching out the devils and other celestial beings. Pretty sure therapy ain't going to help that. Plus it's that attitude of trying to inject real life as to why her and Coates did horrendously in their comics stints
Coates book was out before the movie and I think before the first trailer.
Also Gay's book was among the top 100 (maybe even 50) on Amazon before the movie came out.
Both their reputations got those books selling and then the movie came and that was it for the next 2-3 years.
Those books were getting review before the previews came out-mainly the main title.
If win over Oprah-that is ALL you need. She'll get your book to sell to her club.Somehow, he's convinced people he's actually good at fiction.
Hudlin's book was not meant to be canon at first. To be fair to Hudlin,
Priest left the next writer in a HORRIFIC spot
Priest fought for his book and finally let it go.
Coates also had the benefit of being new to fiction so pretty much everyone (except those who disagreed with his politics or just weren’t interested in BP) had no expectations coming in. People thought “BP is a political character, Coates is a political writer, this is gonna be fantastic”. Ridley doesn’t have that at all, his books have been largely seen as middling by the comic-reading audience and I imagine there are a lot of people who are gonna have less patience with him on BP or not care to see what he does at all.
He has zero room to **** things up before the book hits below the cancellation level. If his first arc is just retreading story beats left by Coates and taking the same approach with T’Challa then the book will flop harder than the last volume. Which is just a terrible look for a character who’s stock is already set to dramatically fall with his removal from the MCU. You can’t be in place where Marvel is seriously questioning how relevant you are to your own franchise and you’re out here flopping two and half volumes back to back with virtually every spin-off doing poorly on top of that. And then you’re also a black character lol.
Since Wakanda Forever is opening a week after the Flash, do you think its box office numbers will be affected in any way?
T'Challa
A.K.A. The Black Panther
King of Wakanda
King of the Dead and The Champion of Bast
Two-Time Time Magazine "Person Of The Year"
Six-Time People Magazine "Sexiest Man Alive"
You can pay somebody to write Super Heroes but you can't pay people to like them.
Now that Supers are big business you now have people who are in the genre but not necessarily fans of it. Before it was either industry lifers or fanboys that graduated into the industry working with Super Hero genre.
Now it's people from other media who may not like or understand the genre at all working in it. Because that's where the money is now.
I remember before '89 you even had people IN the industry who didn't see how ANY serious take on Supers could work, let alone the peeps who thought comics made no sense period.
Like for example, Zorro and Robin Hood were social protesters/revolutionaries facing oppressive, murderous regimes. THEY made sense. Batman doesn't make sense to them and he never will.
When people like that get thier hands on the material you get something like the Gotham TV series or Coates Black Panther.
The real problem is comics fans generally speaking, don't take to deconstruction too well. So there's always going to be a portion of the media that these Creators will produce that will inevitably piss off the fandom.
But since there's real money and prestige in the genre now, we aren't getting rid of those kinds of creatives anytime soon.
