A vote every year? No. I think it would be a better idea to have this every four years.
Pretty sure there's precedent for that, just can't recall where.
I get the feeling that this is already pretty much a done deal and they're already planning who will be on next year's X-Men team with one or two new candidates for readers to vote on...

What if this whole voting process was actually just fake, a promotional stunt for the new team? The team already established but they wanted to make the readers feel important and believing to be part of the process.
Hellfire Gala: Steam Baths and Hot Takes
I'm reminded of the fun fan interaction / investment created by the old Legion elections for leader, but they weren't crazy enough to have them every year! It takes so many writers for-freaking-ever to get their stories off the ground, and swapping out characters just as the writer is 'finding their voice' sounds like it could be disruptive.
Plus there's the whole 'inmates running the asylum' aspect of letting popular votes determine who shows up on each team, and them devolving into Wolverine, Cable, Deadpool and the shooty, stabby X-Posse of Characters Who Have Their Own Books Anyway. And Glob. For reasons.
And then we get Galaxy Size X-Men with Brian Morrison and Clyde Wyncham as the main Omegas.
That’s not a concern because that’s not how this election system works. Fans don’t get to write in whoever they want, all the nominees are chosen by the x-office with some consideration for how they would fit into the larger team dynamic. Besides, the fan vote would only determine one or maybe two team members max.

I think a hellfire Gala done in space with the different earth teams and cosmic empires and with Storm as regent would be quite interesting.

Yeah a different mutant should host the gala each year to shake things up. Magik would set up a killer party in Limbo.
I suppose there would be an understandable fear that someone might take the opportunity to do a red wedding
Sounds like a lot of wishfull thinking (especialy since we have yet to learn how well the Gala did with actual buyers and silent fans) and underestimating the diminshing returns of repeating events created to showcase something impressive (rather than an annual "meet and greet" and handing out prices).
Sounds like the perfect setup for the next Hellfire Gala to be Woodstock '99.
