Well, Marvel is a company and they need to make money, but if they can do so whilst creating new, strong female characters for their books then its a win-win.

And no reasonable person is concerned about "the list" least of all anyone on tumblr...the people who care are the ones who've decided that they don't care for MG. And what drama?
What ed2962 said. All this drama comes directly from the fans, not Marvel itself.

I'm so non-plused that this is even controversial.

This line of thinking is flawed because it doesn't fairly judge Moon Girl on her merits as a character, that there are plenty of other women in the Marvel universe more deserving on their own book but instead we're all stuck with an obnoxious brat like Moon Girl. Even this whole argument surrounding the 'smartest person in the world list' is just another attention seeking exercise. I don't think anyone in the comic community or Tumblr for that matter cared about the list until Marvel suddenly turned into this lightning rod for unnecessary drama.
Then you take your argument to the folks who listen to pitches and green light books.

This is NOTHING new as it happened to plenty of other characters-especially those of color, LGBT and previous successful guys like Darkhawk.

As for the drama-Moon Girl fans are not starting drama-it's the folks who don't care for her that start the mess up.

Are the people who dislike Moon-Girl reading her book?

    Serious question.

Do "Don't buy it if you don't like it" and "How can you dislike it if you aren't reading it" contradict one another?

With Marvel's blatant misuse of social media in recent years the line between fans and the creative talent has blurred. More often than not you have Marvel staff leading the charge with accusations of racism and sexism, Marvel's supports see this happening and feel validating in their own aggressive rhetoric. To them Moon Girl isn't a character worth supporting, she's just cannon fodder in this endless culture war Marvel has started-up. The petty arguments about the sudden importance of this 'smartest person in the world' list is just more pointless drama from a company that has long since lost its focus.

If you've read the book and don't like it, why not just move on.

If you're already biased against the character before you've read the book, why pick it up?

If you're not reading the book and you don't like it, wtf? Why comment at all?

    Because it's a free world?

People still comment on Coates and Black Panther, after all.

Those people like Black Panther. They just don't like Coates.

But if people want to spend time commenting on characters they don't like, it is as you say a free world.

Let them continue about their merry way.

    NO.

The question is what is the point of crapping on Moon Girl if one has never read the book?

A common issue when we see all this POC, LGBT & female lead book bashing-lead by folks who can't tell you the dang thing about the book.

Someone who read Moon Girl can point out what there is to dislike. NOT take one scene in a preview and go on rants about her.

For a book that is a low seller-it gets WAY more attention than a lot of books that sell better.

Trashing Moon Girl does what? What does it really do? What message is Marvel suppose to get? Marvel are suppose to listen to complainers and not the parents, teachers and even kids that enjoy Moon Girl. Ignore the little girls including those who are not black dress as her in cosplay.

You have a small handful of people who write for Marvel make some comments on twitter that rubbed a few people the wrong way. I don't think this is any validation of a make believe "aggressive rhetoric" on the part of Marvel. And as long as Moon Girl makes money for the company in some fashion, Marvel will support her. When her title stops being profitable, they'll stop publishing it...just like every other thing they've done for 50+ years. And yeah, there's a culture war out there but Marvel didn't start it by printing comics about girl geniuses and dinosaurs.

It's no longer possible to seperate comments on social media from official statements, most companies in the entertainment industry already understand this... except Marvel it seems. When Marvels employees and freelancers attack people on social media it's the samething as Marvel itself abusing social media. In the end Moon Girl is just another casualty of Marvel's culture war, a children's book politicised to score points with the Tumblr crowd. That will be Moon Girl's lasting legacy, something only associated with pointless drama in a dark period for Marvel as a company.

It's not that hard to separate the views of freelancers from official company statements. It's just that some fans refuse to do so because it feeds their feelings of victimhood... "Marvel is at war with it's fans!" And what's so political about a little girl genius?

Hey BCB, I knew that sort of response would be levied at some point so I already had my rebuttal locked and loaded.
